Surgery Scheduled - Nervous
My surgery is scheduled for next month however, I am still undecided. It has been six months of extensive testing and doctors appointments. I do know that the surgery will improve my health significantly but there are side effects that occur that I'm nervous about.......will I constantly throw up, hair loss and dumping syndrome. I've gone over all these topics with my surgeon, he is very comforting and answers all my questions so I am comfortable with the Dr I've chosen, I guess its the unknown that freaks me out.
Have any of you experienced significant hair loss after VSG
Its normal to be nervous and worried. And everyone has different experiences with the surgery. Some lose their hair and some don't. Some get sick and some don't. Some come through surgery fine and others have complications. You mention dumping, I was not aware those that have VSG dump but RNY does? I may be wrong?
Why don't you post this on the VSG forum to reach out to those that have had the same surgery as you are going got have.

Anyone, regardless of surgery or not, has the potential to experience dumping. RNY just increases the chances.

I got my VSG about 10.5 months ago and I'm super pleased with it. I did have a complication about three months out that was strange. My restriction went nuts and I had to take an anti-spasmodic for a week to get things back to normal. Aside from that, I've had zero issues.
I've thrown up a few times. Once when I ate salmon that was too dry, once when I had to eat "just one more sugar snap pea!", a few times during the aforementioned complication, and then a few times when I had kidney stones. The stones weren't related to my VSG though, so that doesn't really count :) I vomit when I'm in intense pain and kidney stones do that to a person.
I have not experienced significant hair loss post-op. I did, however, shave my head to raise money for St. Baldricks about 6 weeks post-op. I've kept my hair short since then, so it's unclear if I would have noticed hair loss? Getting your hair cut to a style that can hide the loss is definitely a good option. It will grow back, though, even if you're one of the lucky people who experiences hair loss due to the surgery.

I'm not far enough out to have hair loss yet. But I assume I will, since everyone does. But it will grow back. In just 6 weeks I have gained so much! As for throwing up and dumping, I haven't had either. I stay far away from sugar and when I need a "fix" I grab a sugar free Popsicle. Only you know if this is right for you, but I'd gladly trade all my hair for the life I'm gaining.
Google Telogen Effluvium so you completely understand the hair loss thing and how it's related to **any** surgical procedure, extreme illness, or even giving birth. It starts a few months post-op, lasts a few months and stops on its own. No extra protein, biotin, vitamins, shampoo, NOTHING prevents or stops this occurance. Most have minimal impact (only the shower drain and I noticed mine), while some had more severe results. You get a cute layered haircut to blend in the new growth and deal with it.
Dumping only occurs in half of the RNY patients - also a toss up. If you constantly throw up, see the doctor, because that isn't normal for anyone.
