CAN you give up sweets? Of course you can! WILL you give up sweets? This is a question only YOU can answer. if you're relying on dumping to FORCE you to give up sweets---then you're not ready for WLS.

Anyone CAN dump, even non-ops. Having any sort of surgery on your digestive tract increases the likelihood that you WILL dump, at some time in your life. Having the RNY gives you a one-in-three chance of dumping regularly on sweets. ONE IN THREE, so don't count on it. Also, many, many people who dump like trucks in the first few months gradually cease to dump AT ALL. And some people dump but still eat sweets, knowing they're going to suffer for it. Some of us are just broken that way.

I am NOT trying to tell you not to have WLS in general, or the RNY in particular. I AM telling you that you should do some more research and a lot more soul-searching before you go under the knife. As much as it sometimes irks me when people say "WLS is just a tool", it's true that no form of WLS will do all the work for you, or 'make' you 'eat good'. That's still ALL ON YOU.

Pre-op, I could go through huge bags of M&M Peanuts.  Post-op, I wasn't at all interested in candy.  I deliberately walked through an entire aisle of bagged candy, found the M&M bin, stuck my nose into it, inhaled deeply, and didn't feel the slightest desire for the candy.  I hope it's the same for you.  You are the only one in charge of the enabler at the end of your arm.  Take charge.
