Can I give up sweets?
I just went to my final appt and will be getting a call within 2 weeks to schedule a surgery date. I KNOW I need this surgery but I am so scared that I won't be angle to give up sweets. I had been down 12 lbs in 3 months and gained 6 back due to xmas. I'm soooo mad at myself. Help!
Congratulations on your upcoming surgery date! I was worried about the same thing, too, when I was pre-op. But the kicker was that I knew that either path I chose, I'd have to give up sugar. I was either going to get diabetes if I stayed morbidly obese (it runs rampant in my family) and would have to give it up for that reason, or I was going to give it up for the surgery and the incredible weight loss and the changes it made in my life...not just in my wardrobe, but in almost everything.
Hopefully you'll have dumping syndrome (assuming you're getting gastric bypass) if you slip up and try something sweet; you will find out that it's NOT worth it. Ugh. 8.5 years later, I still get it, though not as severe as at first.
Believe in yourself. You are worth it!

Stephanie, I'm praying I actually get the dumping so that it steers me away from the sweets! Thank you for responding.
No WLS surgery will fix your head.
I am in maintenance...6 years..if i eat sweets - i gain and i gain a lot and very fast. I rarely eat real sweets. But i learned to make my own with Stevia. NSA. (Btw -i am a dumper RNY plus i get severe RH...but over last few years i learned how to eat around it - if i choose to do it. I choose not to do it 99.9% off the time.
Unless your want more to lose with than have sweets..maybe you need too wait until you are ready? Get some counseling in a mean time.

I've got a car battery and some jumper cables. I'll give it a shot, if you really want. I'll need that waiver signed first.

What surgery are you having?, is it rny?, not everyone dumps with sweets if they have that wls, so don't depend on it to give up sweets.
I still luv sweets & I haven't given it up, but I cut way, way back on it or sometimes I'll eat sweets with the fake sugar, but every now & then I need the real thing, the only difference now is that it doesn't spiral to eating more sweets. If I want sweets I'll buy a snack pack & only eat part of it & spread the rest out over a couple of days. Going all or nothing has never worked out for me in the past, but moderation has been working well so far.
