gastric upset, heartburn, refux
I am 4.5 yrs out after vsg & am loving it. I did have heartburn the first 3-6 months on occasion but it was a pain in my back. The only time I have any reflux is if I eat and lie down soon after. This was the best decision I ever made to help myself. I haven't updated my weight, but I am about 5-6 pounds over my lowest weight and can maintain it easily. You do have to work at it. I can't eat anything I want, not because of the sleeve but because I know I can gain weight back if I'm not careful. I still can't eat as much as I once did.
I am 4.5 years out from the sleeve. I am currently at 91 lbs off. I range from 105 to 90 lbs lost. I work at it every week. I exercise regularly and that's what helps the most.
Relux/GERD. In the first few weeks after the sleeve I remember have difficulty with nausea. I was told to back off and go back to liquid/very soft foods and then I began to feel better. It takes a while for your stomach to heal and the swelling to go down internally. I do have bouts where I take Prilosec for a week or so but not often. If I do not overeat, I do not have any issues. The mind game is a never ending struggle with weight. I recently asked a gastro dr. about whether he has seen an increase in patients with bariatric surgery having GERD and he said no. I can eat all types of food (good and bad) and seem to tolerate it all fine.
I'm a DSer, but the top half of my surgery is a sleeve.
I had reflux pre-op, and my surgeon told me it would get worse with the DS, and it did. That's because the acid has nowhere to pool, so it backs up and irritates the esophagus, causing heartburn.
The solution for me is omeprazole for life. If I forget even one dose, by the middle of the night, I know I missed it for sure!
For me, taking a pill along with my other pills was a small price to pay to get a surgery that would not only help me lose weight, but keep it off permanently!
