I can highly recommend Dr. John Gonzalez in San Antonio. He did my revision almost four years ago.

When I lived in San Antonio I was going to see Dr. Gonzales also.  Unfortunately in the end my insurance rejected the request.  So I didn't have the surgery with him.  I had it years later when I got another job with better insurance.  I would definitely check him out.

I would highly recommend Dr. Michael Seger wih BMI of Texas. He and his staff are awesome. I had gastric bypass in 2012 and lost around 190 pounds and am maintaining. I'd be happy to provide any additional info! 😄

I am 38, used to be 5'6 and now I am 5'5.5 from all this weight!  my current weight right this second is 311.8 I just checked.  My sister and my niece are both post op from gastric bypass (I am assuming RNY although I dont know if this is the only gastric bypass procedure) anyway I watched them both struggle with their weight loss post op.  Don't miss understand they melted like and ice cube in August but my niece had issues with backing up, she literally didn't have a bowl movement in time and puked!  Yuck!  and this happened to her more than once.  Her other greatest challenge seemed to be craving carbs.  She lost lots of weight, forgive me I do not have specifics but she went from well over 300 and a size 22 down to a size 10 and she is 5'11 so this looked amazing on her!  Now she looks like she is back up to maybe a 16 or so.  She looks healthy and she seems happy but from my personal perspective I would not want to have gained that much back.  Oh and she is post op approx 5-6 years and its only been within the last year or so that she seems to have started putting weight on. Oh and she was only 20 when she had surgery.  My sister had her's afterwards so she is now post op 4-5 years and she looks great in my opinion.  She personally thinks she needs to lose weight but she is 52 years old and looks healthy!  Her cons to surgery seem to be her love affair with food.  As a family we have a culture of bonding around food.  Our get togethers are huge meals.  Our stories are Mamaw's chocolate pie and Momma's dressing and whipped potatoes and the list goes on!  Its been a very big change for her to adjust to enjoying these experiences with our family and not making herself sick or not missing the family time due to feeling deprived of the experience of the meal.  Not sure if any of this makes sense to you but I wanted you to understand my culture and therefore my concerns for my success with bariatric surgery.  Now, my sister to date has adjusted very well to the psychological side effects of her surgery and will tell you unequivocally that she would do it again without a single hesitation.  We are all super concerned with my health.  I am the largest I have ever been todate.  I feel like sleeping all the time.  I have started developing all these health issues over the last year and its scaring me.  I have never been a small woman.  But I maintained tolerable weight util around 2006 when I weighed 187 lbs  In 2009 I had crept up slowly over the years to 212 but between Feb of 2009 and Oct 2009 I went from 212 to 278!  I have been creeping up the scale ever sense.  Also I have had increasing health issues cropping up since 2009 and they have snowballed this past year.  In 2014 I was diagnosed with GERD, TYPE II Diabetes, and metabolic syndrome X which I looked up and basically means I have gotten so overweight it is now killing me faster.  So I am desperate to lose this weight and live a long life to enjoy my family.  I have tried everything from Weigh****chers to adipex, phentermine, Advocare, Plexus Slim, slim fast, Hydroxycut, and a huge list of other online or in store over the counter weightloss programs.  If I had all the money I have spent on those I could literally pay for 2 bariatric surgeries in full.

I am not as caught up in I want to look better anymore.  I truly just want to be healthy and free of disease.  My daughter has type 1 diabetes and she needs me.  I want to be able to enjoy my life and not sleep it away or take Ibuprofen just so I can physically stand walking the mall with her or climbing the bleachers at the football game to watch my son.  I have no idea what surgery is right for me and I am slightly afraid of life threatening complications during the surgery but at this point I feel that my health is declining rapidly anyway so my risks are higher without it than with.  Any advice or information you or anyone else that has taken time to read all this can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading this huge post :)

I consulted with Dr. Patel at his Austin office. My insurance wouldn't approve surgery with him as he did not practice at a center of excellence according BCBS. Standards. He recommended a doctor in Houston.

I choose to have surgery in Austin at a center of excellence according to BCBS with another surgeon. I am very pleased with my decision.

I didn't hear anything bad about Dr. Patel. My decision was made based upon my insurance.
