FINALLY!!!!
Yay!! I was so happy but also so nervous! I think being nervous is good! You are taking a big step and it is not to be taken lightly. I would say follow your doctor's orders precisely, take your vitamins religiously and initially concentrate on getting fluids in. A common cause of re-hospitalization is dehydration. I was so afraid of that, that I sipped and sipped water all day long. The next thing to concentrate on is protein/shakes but the water or other fluid will be your first priority. The other thing I learned (I am 5 months RNY post op) is that the recommendations for progressing on food is based on averages and everyone progresses differently. I was/am slow to tolerate foods and trusting what my body is telling me has been a learning curve but I do so much better when I pay attention to the signs (early twinges saying I am eating too fast, not chewing well enough, etc.) Allow plenty of time to eat, planning is key - I still get caught off guard sometimes because I can't just gulp down food before I head out the door. I was very overwhelmed at first but it DOES get better! You will find lots of encouragement and support here. This was the best decision for me. I have learned patience and that is important. This will change your life!! Congratulations!
Thank you Sharon for the advice and wisdom of your experience. What I love about this site is that there are folks who are new like me and then there are those who are years post op and are still here to help the newbies. My surgeon and I decided that the vertical sleeve would be my best option. I am nervous but I am trying to stay focused on the positive life changes post surgery, hearing about other experiences (both bad and good) helps a great deal. Thanks again.
Cheers
Ellie
That is the norm here on the east coast. Moncton, New Brunswick is where the surgery is being done and yes it was a long wait but hopefully worth it. The program is world class with medicare paying the entire shot for all who meet the criteria. We are followed for many years by our medical team (family doctor, surgeon, nurse, dietitian and psychologist), all of whom are at our disposal at anytime in our post surgery years. They certainly set us up to succeed...here's hoping.
Yay!!! You much be the MOST patient person ever! Congratulations!!!
I was soooo nervous and very emotional before surgery. I almost had a panic attack the day before we flew to Mexico. I had the added concern of doing this in Tijuana but it was really my only option. It was the very BEST decision I have ever made! I was and am SO proud of myself for having the courage to take this huge step. You will do GREAT! It's totally normal to be emotional! You are about to radically change your life! so exciting! Good luck to you! :)
