Imitation crabmeat. Is it crap? I think so!

I was looking at it the other day in the store... couldn't bring myself to buy it.

I used it once in combination with real crab meat in a crab salad type of dip that I was making for a relatively large group (so it was less expensive to mix them), and it was fine for that, but I just didn't like the taste of it alone so I haven't used it since then.

I wasn't surprised that it had extra sugar/carbs that the crab doesn't have (it needs some extra flavoring, after all) but I didn't realize that it has less than half as much protein! Only 6g of protein in 3 ounces is ridiculously low.  that knowledge also guarantees that I won't buy it again!

I live on the coast where the real thing is readily available.... Yes, compared to that... It tastes bad. But it's really not horrible. Just not as good as the real stuff.

Wow, I just always figured it was simply some sort of bottom feeder fish.  Those stats are eye-opening.  Just another reason to treat myself to the real thing!

I use to eat this all the time pre-op, but didn't have a clue it was in California rolls.  Thanks for the heads up

Seriously makes me want to ----texture, smell, taste....BLECK! The Dude bought some two nights ago and wanted to put it on his pizza, I was fine with that because I don't eat pizza anymore.

There's a great fresh seafood place in Salem, OR that I go to every couple weeks. When I walk in the door, the counter guy picks up the smallest container possible and puts about 3 ounces of fresh REAL crab meat in it. Without saying a word! Then he wraps up a fresh trout for me to bring home and cook for The Dude.

yeah, go real or go home    (does that work?)

I try not to eat anything processed or "imitation", if I can't pronounce everything on the label then I don't want it in my body.
