Vertical Sleeve or RNY? I am confused now!

My concern is getting to a healthy bmi and staying there. I know it can be done with the sleeve as well as the RNY. My thing is the heartburn, I know the sleeve doesn't relieve it and I need that, I can't go more than a day without an OTC antacid. I am getting more comfortable with the idea of the RNY and I really believe it will a good fit. I am glad you are having success with the sleeve!

What did you think of Dr. Schauer and how far from Cleveland Clinic do you live?

Thanks! I can tell you I also had a lot of heartburn before surgery and still have some after as well.  I used to take Nexium everyday before WLS, now I take a Zantac 150 if needed.  I really just have to watch what I eat and it's controlled.  It's certainly something you should take into account when choosing.

I loved the medical side, was very happy with Dr. Schauer and the whole staff.  I did have some serious complaints with the finance side and how slow they were to get some errors fixed on the insurance side.  They messed up and I received a 6000 bill, it eventually was corrected and submitted properly.  They also had me approved for wrong surgery initially.

At the time I lived in Medina, so only 35 minutes or so from hospital, now I live in Stow.

I still haven't made my final decision. I am leery of the idea of re-arranging my intestines, and I like the simplicity that the sleeve is a relatively straightforward procedure, but I also worry that I will not be as successful with the sleeve, because of my PCOS and my high BMI.  I also have pretty bad heartburn right now, so I am not too keen on a procedure that might make it worse. Plus, I don't like the idea that I could possibly need a revision to RNY in the future.

But then, on the flipside, I read about former RNY patients that now have anemia, osteoporosis, and other problems resulting from malabsorption, and that makes me nervous too!

Ahhhhh!

When I talked to my nutritionist last week, she gave me a list of vitamino I will need to take everyday for the rest of my life after surgery. (I have started taking them now, vitamins are always good.) Iron, calcium with D and an additional vitamin D. There is B12, a multivitamin and I added biotin for hair and nails. If I follow the diet laid out, eat the recommended protein grams daily and take the vitamins I will be good. The list of required vitamin supplements is the same for the sleeve, at least at Cleveland Clinic it is.

That wad my fear also with the malabsorption, but the more research and after my consultation, I feel good about the RNY and my success. After March 3rd, I can make a final decision and start the final insurance process and schedule. So I still have plenty of time to research and think.

Good luck with your decision!
