I am 5 weeks post rny surgery.  Have lost 35 lbs.. I am having problems with dry heaving.  If I get up and try to do too much, dry heaving,  sometimes different smells cause me to dry heave.  Never throw up.  Just curious to know if anyone else has experienced this and what they were able to do about it if they have experienced it.  Thank you for any input.

I have experienced a lot of this.  Smells are often a trigger but sometimes just pushing myself a little too hard.  I am exactly a month out from surgery now and it has been improving in just the last few days.  I will often gag/dry heave until I burp several times.  Sometimes a little foam will come up.  My surgeon at first assumed it was because I was eating too fast but it usually happens on an empty stomach.  Even knowing that, he did not express any concern.  So I just put up with it and now it seems to be getting a little better...hopefully it will for you too!  Or someone else will post a wonderful solution for us!

Dry heaving is usually caused from nausea. The reason it is 'dry' is because you don't have anything in your system. Are you keeping up on your fluids and drinking constantly? It is very easy to get dehydrated in the beginning... which can cause nausea. I was nauseous on and off for the first 2 to 2-1/2 months. I tried anti-nausea meds from Doc but didn't really help. I used to take 2 peppermint Tic-tacs and crush them in my mouth and just let them melt. It really helped me. Carried them everywhere.

Thanks for the info. Helps to know I am not alone.  I am going to try the tic tacs.  Thanks again.

It helps if you post which surgery you gave had.

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

I didn't have dry heaving but smells caused me to gag.  The smells that made me gag were tuna, bacon and peanut butter.  I'm fine with them now but for the first few months, I had bad gags with those smells.

Give your surgeon's office a call to let them know.  Make sure to get in your water and protein.

I am trying my best to drink, drink, drink and recently found a protein powder that I can actually tolerate.  Thanks again for the advice and support.

I did go back to the hospital and was told I too was dehydrated and received 2 bags of fluid.  Felt better for a few hours but right back to being weak and dry heaving.  I wish I would get through this phase and be able to move on to getting healthier.
