Has anyone else not lost weight on pre-op diet?

I'm on day 5 of the PRE-Op full liquid diet, the first 2 days I lost 10 pounds and I was thinking to myself "HOLY COW!  I've found the secret to weight loss...don't eat solids" haha, we'll that didn't last long as I gained 6 of those pounds back.  I'm not complaining because I am still down 4 pounds in 5 days and that is more success than I've ever had, but I was just curious if anyone didn't actually lose weight during this phase?

Also, a question for All vets, what soups did you eat (drink) during this stage and post-op full liquid?

If you're drinking a lot of soup, check your sodium content. It can drive water retention. I had the advice from a good friend/fellow sleever a few months ahead of me to make broth from scratch. You can control the sodium that way.

My preop diet was whatever I wanted so long as it was 20g carbs MAX per day. So, I ate a lot of meat and some veg. I lost 15 pounds in 2 weeks.

Post op, I was on clear liquids for 2 weeks and I generally only had protein shakes, skim milk (allowed) and water. I might have thrown some bouillon in there as well, but again, the sodium. Even the unjury chicken protein soup, which was tasty, was really salty to me. The very best thing was realizing that, 10 days after surgery, I could have french onion soup broth. I was in a hotel and ordered it from room service. I strained out the solids with a fork and just LOVED it. It was the most fantastic thing I had ever had.

Once I hit full liquids, I loved tomato soup. I also strained out the goodies from anything in a can and ate that, again, sticking to lower sodium because my tastes had changed. I found progresso was a good brand to stick with. Later in my full liquids phase, I started tossing a can of soup in a blender to liquify the solid bits and that gave even more flavor.

Good luck,

Laurie

Thank you for the advice! I bet you the sodium is key! I was worried about too many carbs, but I am within the limit the nutritionist allows for post-op, so I'm convinced that is the problem.  Not once have I thought about sodium.

I have become increasingly sensitive to it. I had Indian last night that was saltier than I am used to and I could feel it in my fingers before bed. Upping my liquids today to try to flu**** out.

I did canned Campbell's or Progresso low fat and low sodium soups. Premiere Protein shakes (30g/protein per serving), sugar free pudding, plain Greek yogurt with Truvia added. I did lose weight pre-op. They wouldn't even schedule the surgery until I had (total of 25 pounds then I lost another 6 just before surgery on the clear liquid diet).

Thank you!  I'm thinking it's the sodium, I will change things up today and see if it makes the difference.

Been thru this twice now, and both times, I either lost very little, or gained some back. Not sure why, but all was still good with the surgery.

Five shakes a day, plus broth and jello was my pre-op diet.  Water weight will shift with salt intake as others have said.  However, I have found that the water retention evens out --  especially if I am taking in enough fluids.

Over 14 days, I lost 18 lbs total.  Good luck to you!

I was wondering that same thing! I only had a dial scale so I was having trouble reading the little markings. I got a digital scale, and if my initial weight was correct on the dial one, I've lost 5 lbs. if not, I've lost nothing lol.

But I'm not that concerned, it's meant to shrink the liver, so hopefully it's doing that and I'm not going to stress about it the weight right now. Now that I have the digital scale I can actually read clearly, I'll know at the end of the week if I've had more progress :) for now, going with the 5 lbs :)
