So I'm getting close to the end of all my doctors appointments. And I was super psyched for surgery by the end of next month. And then the financial department called and said that my bcbs or Illinois plan requires surgery be done at a blue distinction hospital.

Well.... crap. D: I just feel like I'm at the beginning again. Anybody else had this problem?

Last year when they checked my plan. There was no mention of this.

Find out if your records can be moved to one of those hospitals.

Insurance plans and requirements often change at the beginning of new year.  It is a good idea to complete anything during the same year and with the same insurance requirements.

It may have been overlooked when you started getting ready for surgery, or it might have just changed without warning.  Insurance policies will often have a statement that they can change their rules at any time.

I am sorry this happened and please let us know how it all works out.

I have BCBSTX and they required a Center od Distinction as well.  Why do you think that will hold you up? My doctor just arranged to perform the surgery at the nearest one.

Well hopefully my surgeon will be flexible and move to do the surgery. I feel as though it's a lot to ask though.

I had a similar thing happen. My insurance required a "center of excellence" or Whatever they called it.  The surgeon I was working with didn't have privileges at that center so they changed me to a different doctor within that practice. Also, took a bit longer to get in because it was a much smaller hospital with fewer ORs. In the end, it all worked out perfectly!  I LOVE my doc and the hospital was like a 5 star hotel!!
