Frustrating setback.

My insurance requires me to complete 6 months of supervised dieting before my surgery, no problem.

Before I start my official supervised diet I have to pass a drug, alcohol, tobacco test. No problem.

I took the test two weeks ago and have been waiting for my surgeons office to call to let me know the results were back so we could schedule the appt. She finally called today and told me I failed the test, I tested positive for tobacco. It was a tiny amount ( I registered a level 4) but in order to proceed I have to register a 0. I don't smoke but the other day I was in the backseat of my friends car and her fiance was in the front seat smoking. His window was down but a bit of smoke was blowing back into my face.

I'm so frustrated that a tiny amount of second hand smoke set me back an entire month. I had already started dieting on my own but this makes me want to dive head first into chocolate cake. I won't, because I know I need to find a new way to control my emotions but maaaannnn it's really hard.

Tobacco? Really? Ugh!

Sorry, just needed to vent.

Wow I never heard of anyone being drug tested. And for them to delay the start of the 6 months too. They can still retest you while you are dieting. Yup that stinks.

They test in the beginning, middle, and end( end being the day before surgery). I never thought for a second that there would be any problems with it. I was so stunned I couldn't even say anything. I can't believe this is setting me back an entire month.

She even said they know I'm not smoking because the levels were too low for it to be first hand smoke, but it doesn't matter. Rules are rules I guess.

Nicotine interferes with healing, and can be very dangerous. Many surgeons won't touch someone with a positive nicotine test. It doesn't matter how it got there. Some think using nicotine gum is ok, but it isn't.

I understand and respect the reason why, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to throw a temper tantrum :)

Oh no! How long before the levels will go away so you can go retest asap? I would never have guesses this.

I can retest in February. Until then I'm staying far away from anyone who smokes!

Dang.  I would be hopping mad!  So much for those who think their second hand smoke isn't hurting anyone.....

That is total and complete bull****  Especially if you have a documented medical history of being a  non-smoker.

I understand your frustration!  I can deal with my own mess-ups, but I don't want to be penalized for someone's else's.  It will be worth the wait in the end, though.  Keep plugging along.  And good for you for NOT plunging into the chocolate cake.  It shows you will be ready when the time finally comes.
