I had surgery at 52 and lost a ton. Sorry, that's an exaggeration. A little more than an eighth of a ton.

6'3" tall, male.

Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.

I had mine at 53 (2 years ago) and lost 130 pounds. I see people in our support group who are in their 60's (and quite possibly 70's). No you are not too old! Good luck!

I was 56 going on 57 when I had the DS. I lost all my excess in less than a year.

However, the poster that said you can't be too old is wrong. Many surgeons DO have age limits, usually no lower than 65, some go to 70 or 75 but waiting til you are in your 80's or 90's may just be too old for WLS.

However, given that you are 7 years younger than I am, I sure as heck do NOT consider you old!

I was 51 and weighed 419 lbs prior to surgery in December 2013.  I'm at 238 lbs today and don't believe my age has hindered my weight loss.  People who are younger may lose some weight faster, but it's important to remember that weight loss is a marathon, not a sprint.  If you don't have surgery, how much will you weigh in one year?  Two years?  Five years?   My weight always seemed to increase over time.

Please believe me when I tell you that I feel better now than I have in years.  Having WLS was the best thing I've ever done for myself.  Don't rule yourself out as a candidate based on your age.  The problems you may have such as joint pain, diabetes, etc., will only get worse as you age unless you take the steps to lose weight now.

Very best of luck to you

I had my surgery 2 days before my 56th birthday. I had over 200 pounds to lose. I wasn't ready before for whatever reason, but I figure the years I have left I want them to be the best they can be. I had my surgery 5 1/2 months ago and lost 25lbs before surgery and 83 since. I haven't done this perfectly, you just keep moving forward.

Lets see there is the heart stress test prior, I passed even with 7 stents and open heart surgery prior. If you pass all your tests you should be ok to go ahead with wls. I wouldn't wait too much longer. Takes a good time to get all the tests completed.

Hi there, I had my surgery (RNY) a few days before my 56th birthday. I have two obese relatives that are now in their 70's, watching them struggling with there weight and health issues and seeing how helpless they feel definitely helped me decide. If not now when? I was only in hospital overnight, I have had very few problems none age related. I am 2 months out and have lost 45lbs. Everyone must decide on their own for their own reasons so do some research weigh your options and make the best decision for you. Good luck on your journey.
