Hi!

I just joined the group & was hoping for some feedback from the over 50 crowd! I am in my late 50's, well over 100 pounds overweight & have been diagnosed with both cancer & a heart condition in the past couple years.

I see myself becoming immobile as I spend a lot of time sitting now. I can't stand long or walk far. I gained 30 pounds over this past summer which is a record for me in such a short time span. This was in part due to my heart meds, but I am so heavy now it is hard to get out of my chair...let alone keep moving!

I need this surgery, but I am afraid I have waited too long to have it. My BMI is approaching 50, I have the heart condition, HBP, sleep apnea, arthritis in my knees...and mounting depression & anxiety!

I would appreciate any feedback from other members as I need a good push to get thru the fear & anxiety.

Thanks for listening!

Kathy

First of all Congratulations on making a decision to better health. I am in my later 50's and my BMI was around 54 when I had surgery. I am 5 months out and down a total of 105lbs pre and post-op. follow their instructions and move forward, one foot in front of the other. You will feel so much better when you lose the weight. Does it guarantee all your medical problems will go away? No. It will make a huge difference though.

Congratulations on reaching out for support. Sometimes that's the hardest step. It's not too late!!!!

I had my surgery 8 months ago, when I was 58 and my BMI was 56. I also had HBP, sleep apnea, arthritis in my knees & feet, depression & anxiety, not to mention Type 2 Diabetes.  So far I am down 151 pounds and feeling great. Diabetes is resolved and my BP is down.  I still have a ways to go but I have no regrets.

Only you and your doctors can decide if this is right for you but... don't give up hope.

Thank you ladies! It is so encouraging to hear that others in my age group have gone through this with serious co-morbidities. I am hopeful I can comply with all the pre-surgical requirements I have to get started, but I am determined to see this through!

I will also check the over 50 group.

Thank you all so much!

Kathy

Welcome to the group!  My mom had her RNY in her 50's and my dad when he was 60. I decided not to wait that long & made it my 40th birthday present.  :)

I had RYN 5 months ago and I am 59. Before I started the process I was 257 at 5'3". I am now 173 and still losing. Lost 31pounds pre-op. It was the best decision I have ever made. I have less knee pain (arthritis) and my BP is much better - still on meds but think I will come off. I bought a recumbent bike to exercise on and it is easy on my knee but gets me moving. I have gone from a 4X to a XL in clothes. I can watch TV when I ride. I was determined to be around as long as possible for me but also for my kids. Their father died 2 years ago from cancer at the age of 61. We had been divorced and he was an alcoholic and it just struck me how sad it was that he hadn't found a way to get right with his life before his death. It hasn't always been easy but neither was being overweight. Good luck!
