quitting smoking prior to surgery
I am wondering how long before nicotine will not show in lab workif you smoke a pack a day.
be advised that smoking can cause poor healing of your surgery site. The internal tissues are way more fragile in someone who smokes than they are in someone who does not.
you don't really want to cause yourself Possible complications do you?
Definitely not. Once i have the surgery i will not pick up another cigarette. I am having this surgery to live. I will not allow cigarettes to jeopardise my healing. If not for this surgery and its importance to me i would probably never quit smoking. This surgery Will increase my life and health in more way than one. I am asking because i am having trouble quiting and i am afraid the nicotine might still be in my labs come time for preop
My friends in the life insurance business told me that 5-7 days before the test you have to quit. Thats what they tell their clients who dont want to pay an extra premium for being a smoker. That being said i had to quit at least 2 months prior to surgery per my surgeon. Its the hardest thing i had to do and i still miss it sometimes. You CAN do this!! I used the nicitrol inhaler that was prescribed by my PCP before switching to a zero nicotine e cig. Both of those give you that hand to mouth gratification. Good Luck!
Lisa (38) my goal is 160 lbs.... my dream is happy and healthy
There is no single answer for this, it depends on so many different factors..
type of test performed, nationality, genetics, mentholated or not, how long someone has smoked, how much they smoke, if they test for just nicotine - which I don't think they do, body weight.. etc
It's best to just quit smoking when your Dr. tells you to rather than trying to beat the system and risk the surgery not being done.
Good Luck!
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am surely not trying to beat the system. I found out in my 4 th class about the smoking being a deal breaker for the surgery. I am trying so very hard to quit smoking nicotine patches did not work, i am now trying my third aid to help me quit smoking which is chantix. It seems to help with cravings, unfortunately i have other issues like a divorce that is making it hard on me on top of my five year old. So believe me its not trying to beat the system. Thank u again
I assumed, I am sorry.
I am disappointed they waited so long in telling you it was a requirement. My bariatric team informed me on my 2nd visit when they took the first set of labs. I wish I had some tips to help you quit smoking.. when my mom was trying to quit, she switched to menthol and hated them, so that helped her cut back a lot, the patch finished the job.
Best of luck to you :)
