Not losing...

I am 18 months post op.  I stopped losing at 4 months.  Never did have the plateau and then begin losing again.  Just completely stopped.  Only lost 55 pounds and now have gained 15 back.  I am apparently allergic to the protein shakes.  Got a rash and itching.  Moved to soy based shakes.  Started itching from them, too.  I am very afraid I'm going to gain all my weight back and simply don't know what to do.  I work with a dietician monthly.  Any ideas, anyone?

If you haven't lost anything in 14 months, you were in maintenance. Were. Now you're gaining. You need to eat less if you want to lose.

I don't know how much you had to lose, but what happened between months 4 and 18?   What the heck is your dietician saying about all that time with no loss and now gain?

I don't mean to be mean, but between months 4-5, I would have chalked it up to a plateau, but after that, I would have been on my surgeons doorstep if I still had weight to lose, with no loss.

At this point, I am guessing that traditional dieting is the best thing .... And maybe firing that dietician and finding one who can help you achieve your goals.

Which surgery have you had? What do you eat? Many of us never use protein shakes - unless you have problems getting enough protein, it is usually better to avoid liquid calories so being allergic to them really isn't an issue! I accept that some types of surgery might need more artificially added protein, I can only really speak for banded people.

this is not intended to be harsh but, quite simply, if you are not losing weight, you are eating too much. Some people eat 1500 a day and still lose. Personally I can lose on 1000-1200 a day. Some people need to eat under 1000 to lose. But the equation, although different foods affect the body in different ways, still remains. If you eat fewer calories than you burn, in order to function the body must use stored energy -fat.

Metaboloc problems, some medicines, some medical conditions may affect you. But that just means your necessary intake is lower.

Stop putting food in your mouth and get a new dietician!

In terms of the allergy to the shakes, it might be an allergy to whey----a milk-based product. Try shakes made without whey, for instance those with egg protein or soy. There are several brands, including Jay Robb.

What does your surgeon say?  You did see your surgeon about this, didn't you?  That would be my move.
