Pre op diets vary widely. Mine was 2 weeks of whatever I liked as long as it was 20 grams of carbs per day, max. I ate a lot of protein and low carb veggies which was really pretty easy and I never had to suffer through nothing but shakes until post op. I lost 15 lbs in that 2 week period. There is a lot of variation out there, so please do check with your doc.

good luck,

Laurie

My surgeon requires a clear liquid diet, but does give a sheet of what is allowed.

A clear liquid diet is just what it says. It has no protein, fiber, fat, or sugar. When you pour the liquid into a glass it should be easy to see through. I was on one for two weeks.

I made one trip to the grocery store. I stocked up on bottled water, sugar-free 7-Up, sugar-free ginger ale, beef and chicken broth, diet cranberry juice, diet grape juice, diet cranberry juice, diet apple juice and some herbal teas.

Diet juices are not low sugar. They are essentially colored and flavored water. I made one mistake and purchased low sugar instead of diet cranberry juice and that spiked my sugar before surgery enough that they almost cancelled. I was about four days into the clear liquid diet and figured out the culprit.

When I stopped drinking that, my sugar went back to normal. I found the clear, liquid diet very easy to follow. I had enough variety for something a little different at each meal. The carbonated drinks were not allowed after surgery, so I finished those up and did not buy more. The teas, broths, and diet juices were OK post-op.

My pre-op diet wasn't a liquid diet at all. It was pretty liberal, compared to others:

breakfast:

8oz skim milk

1/2 scoop protein powder

4 oz fruit

Morning Snack

protein shake (premade or made with powder and water)--NOT a protein bar

Lunch

6-8 oz low fat/light yogurt

4 oz fruit/veg

Afternoon snack:

1 oz nuts OR 2 tbsp peanut butter OR 1/2 cup beans OR hummus

4 oz fruit/veg

Dinner

4 oz protein

4 oz veg with 1 tbsp olive oil

1/2 cup whole grain starch OR 1 slice whole grain bread OR 1/2 potato

Early evening snack

8 oz skim milk

1/2 scoop protein powder

4 oz fruit

I only had a liquid diet, not a clear one, plus I was allowed some vegetables that was on a list they gave me. Your nutritionist should have a list that has what you need, sometimes the dr doesn't have that handy.

I mostly had protein shakes that were low in sugar & carbs.& Crystal light. There's this mexican tortilla broth that was pretty tasty, they have a chinese soup version too. I was also allowed cream soups, so I had butternut squash, cream of mushroom soup (not as many calories as it sounds, by progresso) & sf popsicles.

Thank you, I know what broths your talking about and they are not bad at all. I go in next Friday to get my exact list.

I am glad I just had a clear liquid diet.  I think that withdrawing from food was easier before surgery and then I did not have to go through head hunger afterward.
