Hello everyone. Hang in there! I just returned from a visit with my PCP and now I'm scared to have my surgery that is needed. I had a VBG done in 1990 but developed some problems. The surgery was never right for me. Anyway, I need to have the silastic band sewn in my stomach removed and then have a new stomach reconstructed. I have had many surgeries but now I am really scared about this one. The doctor wants to start out doing it laparascopliy but switch to open if too much scar tissue. I told him I know there is a lot of scar tissue and midas well do it open but no. He's a very good surgeon but not my original surgeon whom is in NJ. The doctor couldn't tell me how long the surgery is going to be. I'm told this is a complicated surgery by both my Gi doctor and PCP. I hate the recovery process! Thanks for listening to my rant. My surgery is Thursday December 18th.

The VBG was a horrible surgery. There are a couple of regulars around *****vised from it. I think everyone who had VBG suffered because of it.

I hope everything goes well.

I had VBG in 1986.  I lived in agony with it until 2010 when I was revised to an RNY.  I had severe complications and saw six doctors who told me they had "never seen anything like this".  I was finally referred to Mayo Clinic where they agreed to try to repair my mutilated stomach. The surgery took twice as long as they predicted.  I had LOTS of scar tissue.  I woke up from surgery and had IMMEDIATE relief from the horrible GERD.  I went from vomiting every meal to never vomiting.  I have only vomited three times in four years.  Having the revision gave me my life back.  I think my recovery took a little longer than average, but it wasn't terrible.

Don't be scared. You will feel so much better when it's done.  Best wishes to you!

I had the same surgeon as you.  I wish you the best of luck.  Though I had complications, he fixed me the next day.
