I can't attest to your sanity on your choice to have a glass of wine.   I don't like the taste of alcohol now and I don't like how it makes me feel, so I don't drink anymore.  I drank too much before surgery, so am glad to not want it anymore.  My surgeon's advice was to avoid it if possible because of the potential for weight gain and cross addiction.

It's your choice to have a drink or not, just consider the consequences if one drink becomes 2, etc, etc................ weight gain, addiction.....just sayin.........

Looks like different surgeons have different rules.  Mine was no alcohol before 6 months.  Quite frankly, I'm sorry I ever picked up that first drink.  I had NO issues with alcohol before surgery, but developed alcoholism afterwards.  If you'd like some more reasons NOT to drink, please check out the Crossing To Transfer Addictions group, which has over 1000 members here.

Thank you for pointing this out.  I think everyone should be aware of the potential for cross-addictions after WLS.

I think you are ok to have a glass of wine on NYE. I drank for the first time around 3 months. I will just suggest being at home or around people that you are very comfortable with it will effect you differently than it did pre-op. Take it slow.

I spoke with my nutritionist about this and she recommended vodka with crystal light as a low caloric, low sugar option. I think a dry wine would be fine but be careful with sweet wines i would stay away from sangria, moscato or reisling etc.

when? at 12:00 of course!

seriously, i think i was about a year out. some people develop an alcohol problem afterwards. i'm the opposite. i can hardly tolerate one drink. makes me sick, quick. i miss enjoying a drink but its not worth the illness i get afterward.

The reply Grim_Traveller gave to you is right on target.

I would rather eat my calories than waste them on alcohol.  Wouldn't it be just as celebratory to drink sparkling water with a lemon or lime twist?  You've started on this healthy lifestyle since having RNY just five months ago.  Imho, it is too early.

I would ask your Dr. He would know better than anyone else on here. Besides, even all DR.'s have different rules. I believe mine said wait 6 months before I try any. Yours may say go ahead on New Year's or wait longer.
