Lucy ~
What most people were taking issue with was the negativity Lucy was directing toward her daughter's weight and appearance. The underlying message is quite clearly that her daughter does not measure up as she is now, and to do so she will need to lose weight. Lucy mentioned her daughter having 'her pick of men' when she weighed less. For pity's sake, her daughter is in college. There is hardly a need for her to lock herself into a relationship now, and even if she does, there is no guarantee it would be lasting. She seems very concerned over appearance. She doesn't seem concerned about her daughter's attributes such as humor, intelligence, kindness, compassion, or the like-just appearance and snagging a man.
Thinness doesn't cure loneliness and snagging a man (or a woman) isn't a guarantee of happiness.

As a college professor, what concerns me the most is not one single word mentioned about how her daughter is progressing in college academically.
