I had RNY done back in May and I had to pay $750 out of pocket. That included my consult, psych eval, nutrition class, exercise class, and dietician class. But in the end I can't complain, It was the best decision I ever made in my life, plus insurance paid for the rest. (Which came about to be a little over $20,000 when I saw the statement). So i'll gladly accept the $750 charge if my insurance will pay over $20,000!

I agree, but I have met my deductible for the year which is over $5000.00. I've been in the hospital a lot this year. So, an additional $500.00 wasn't cool.

Found out today that there is a class I have to take before the Dr will perform the surgery. It is "required", and costs $500.00. Is this normal? The lady said insurance will not pay for it. Is that also normal? I wish I had known before spending so much money on Christmas presents. Thank God for credit cards!

Not normal. Not necessary IMO, and a rip off!

I only had to pay my $20 co-pays for a few visits. Everything else was covered. I didn't have to buy food either. I dieted on my own and was given a list of vitamins to buy on my own.

I had to attend several classes but there were no charges attached to this. This was included as part of the pre-op work up. I also had to attend 6 post-op support sessions as well. Again, there were no charges for this. I actually went to more of these. I found them very helpful.

My insurance covered everything

I am self pay so I had to pay the $95 I think for the first visit with Dr/nutr/psyc. The psyc had a $60.00 fee or I could have put it thru insurance and take a chance they would deny it (most likely they would).  I have to pay $376 for 4 weeks of food and nutrition classes before they will schedule.  All slightly unexpected.  They post their surgery price on the website and silly me thought this would all be included.  Having gastric Sleeve in February if all works out.  Thanks to this website I had an idea that some extra costs could be involved before I even went.  I suppose it is possible some surgeons include this stuff in their surgery fee and some break it down. without knowing what each surgeon is charging it's hard to compare.

It is up to you. The center I went to in upstate NY did not require any of that. She did require a 5 to 10% weight loss prior to surgery. Nutrition class , pre op and post op. Psych eval, and other tests all covered by my insurance. I could have purchased medifast from them but I think it looks like gruel, so I did premier protein shakes for 2 meals then lean and green. I think insurance companies vary and Dr's vary but I personally would choose a center that did not charge so many additional things.

If you are concerned at all about this fee  call around ask about all the fees at couple of different Drs.  If your paying $20,000.00 with no other fees it's worse than paying $15,000. and fees.  I'd guess the Dr's are getting their money somewhere one way or another.  It's your choice do what makes you feel comfortable.

My psyc Dr was $60.00 upfront or send it to insurance for $300.00 take a chance of it getting denied and having to pay the $300.
