Weight loss

As you can tell I am getting nervous regarding faith in the surgery. I have quite a few 'what if'.  Is it possible not to have any weight loss at all after the surgery no matter how closely you adhere to the plan?

It makes it easier for people to comment if you tell us which surgery you plan to have.  RNY and DS involve malabsorption whereas the sleeve and the band don't.

But, simplistically, if you eat fewer calories than you use, your body must burn stored energy (fat). The speed at which it does this depends on your metabolism, any medication you might take which affects weight, any medical issues such as thyroid problems, your gender, your age, your exercise level. But these factors don't alter the basic facts; they just mean your required intake is lower.

So you can have surgery and not lose a pound, although that is much less likely with RNY and DS. But if you have surgery and follow your doctor's plan, you will lose weight. How fast depends on you.

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

No, it isn't possible to have any WLS and not lose any weight.

How much you lose, and whether you keep it off, though, depend a LOT on your eating behaviors and food choices. no matter which surgery you have, it isn't magic, and it is possible to "fail" with any WLS, even the DS.

I think it would be pretty hard to not have any weight loss if you adhere to your plan :)  I know though, that pretty much all of us have at least a moment of "what if I go through this and I'm the one person it doesn't work for!"  I know I certainly had that moment of fear.  But.. here I am almost 9 months post-op and I've lost 120 pounds.

My fear has never been whether I'd lose weight after surgery...I had no doubt I would. My nagging fear has always been and still is regain. I am scared to death of going back to 300+. This fear is keeping on the straight and narrow during my kids phase. Just praying I can truly maintain this lifestyle for life.

I had the same fear.  Logically, I knew that it was impossible to not lose weight, but I had failed so many times before with diets, it was very hard to get in a positive mindset.  I've been fortunate that my weight loss has been rapid, but you will definitely lose weight.  After the surgery, when you start to lose, it's great!

I've been reading here for over 11 years, and I've never yet seen anyone not lose any weight at all. I have seen people lose very little weight, but even that's VERY rare. I have also seen people regain all the weight they lost, plus some.

This isn't just another diet, but much like a diet, it only works as long as you stick to it.
