I was given a cup of coffee in the hospital after surgury because of a massive headache.  My doctor is fine with coffee and tea as long as I get plenty of water too.

I don't drink coffee, because I don't LIKE coffee---but I drink about a gallon of fully-caffeinated iced tea every single day. I was given caffeinated iced tea in the hospital immediately after surgery.

Caffeine isn't the evil thing some doctors portray it as. Do some research, and decide for yourself.

Okay, here's a weird point -- my doctor at the Cleveland Clinic actually encourages coffee drinking.  He says it's a great source of antioxidants, is good for your liver, is good for brain health and lessens the likelihood of type II diabetes.  He insists that it doesn't dehydrate a body and that as long as it isn't excessive (he defined less than 4 cups a day)  I was allowed coffee as soon as I was comfortable drinking it --- in the hospital before going home after surgery.  :-)
