Question on Pre-Op Medical Tests

I have completed the 6 months of required doctor/nutritionist visits, along with the psych. eval for RNY.  My question is, when do you do all of your pre-op medical testing?  Like having the endoscopy done or the bacteria test?  Are all of those tests done after the insurance approves your surgery?

Can anyone tell me, what medical pre-op tests should be done?  Are the tests all the same from one surgeon to the next or do they vary according to the surgeon's requirements?

Usually the pre-op tests are not done until you have insurance approval.

The tests that are done vary widely from one surgeon to another. My surgeon, for example, did not require an endoscopy, but required a set of respiratory tests that other surgeons often do not.

Thank you Lora.  That is what I thought, because how would I know what tests would need to be completed, if they weren't ordered by my surgeon?  I will also give them a call today to double check-can't hurt.

No you don't have to wait until your surgery is approved to start the pre-op testing! I started mines right after the orientation and my paperwork was sent to insurance for approval yesterday, The only thing left for me to do is the endoscopy and that's next week! But all surgeons are different I can agree with that my surgeon required blood work, h.pylori breath test,Pap smear,Cadiologist, psyc evaluation, dietiatian, ekg, chest X-ray, group meetings and endoscopy! Your surgeon could require the same or less I suggest you give them a call so they can get the ball rolling for you.

I think the moral of this story is call the doctor's office and not ask random strangers because you will get about 50 different answers as to what they did.

I had an EKG, a chest x-ray, and blood drawn the day before surgery.  That was it!  Everyone differs...

You can only really get an answer from your Surgeon's office. For me the endoscopy, pulmonary and cardiac clearance all happened before insurance approval. There was a final pre-op clearance a couple days before surgery.
