Need to lose 5%?!

My surgery is next week, Wednesday, Nov. the 12th. I started my pre-op diet last week on Oct. 29th.

First of all, the weight I met my surgeon with was around 255. I gained 5 pounds shortly after meeting him.

Yesterday morning, 5 days in my pre-op diet, I was 255 again. 5 pounds lost.

This morning I am 257. I gained 2 pounds. I weigh with an empty stomach in the morning each time.

I have been following directions right and have even stayed a bit BELOW my calorie max.

So, originally, I was supposed to lose 5% of 255. That's 13 pounds.

How am I supposed to get down to 242 in 9 days?!

I'm so scared if I'm not down to 242 by surgery day, my surgeon will cancel my surgery.

My diet each day consists of 1-2 shakes (Premier Protein.) 1 protein bar (Quest Bar) and a 5 oz piece of lean meat and 2 cups of non-starchy vegetables. I have been following directions but I'm not going to get to 242):

Do you think my surgeon will cancel me?

If you follow the plan detailed above, it'll pretty much be impossible to NOT lose weight.  Figure you need about 9 calories per pound a day to maintain your weight, that puts you at 2300 calories just to MAINTAIN.  With the information you provided above, you're not eating nearly that much.  Also, it's highly improbable that you put on 2 lbs of fat in a day--it's most likely water.

So, stick to your plan, don't panic and don't weigh every day.  Science is on your side.  :D

How much water are you drinking per day?

Around 40-80 ounces a day I believe.

I think the minimum, both before and after surgery, is 64 ounces.  If you try to increase your water intake to at least that, you will probably see more movement in the scale.  Just a suggestion

I don't know.  Why not call your surgeon's office and ask what will happen if you don't lose the 5%?

Drink lots of water - it will really make a difference - your body is probably holding water because it feels like its in emergency mode with the diminished calories.

I know I take lasix for heart issues and my weight can fluctuate 3-4 lbs days when I forget to take my prescription.

Best of luck to you - my sleeve surgery is on the 11th and I had trouble following my preop low carb diet with Halloween. Ugh - never was bothered by candy before but it tormented me this past weekend!

Some surgeons are VERY strict about patients losing the required amount of weight before surgery and will cancel surgery if they have not lost enough.  Others are not as strict.  There isn't any way for us to know which one yours is, so I second Kelly's suggestion to call his office and ask.
