Kidney stones are common with any rapid weightloss. A friend of mine was very ill for 2 weeks with stones and is at risk of them returning at any time. He had the sleeve.

Are you perhaps confusing kidney stones with gallstones?

I did quite a bit of research in the medical literature on kidney stones after I had my second or third incident of them post-op, and nothing that I heard (from my own surgeon, from the bariatric surgeons I work for part-time, or from my urologist) or read indicated that there was any link to the weight loss itself. There are very specific aspects of RNY that increase the chances of kidney stones.

One person who happened to have them after another surgery doesn't mean there is a link between the two things.  None of the VSG people I know have had kidney stone issues but a number of RNYers I knew have.

The gallstones, on the other hand, are directly tied to the weight loss no matter whether it is from WLS, illness, or traditional dieting.

Yes, I'm sure he had kidney stones. He was told at the ER and later by his surgeon that kidney and gall stones are not uncommon with any rapid weightloss because of the rapid metabolic changes.

Other causes post-op are contributed by allowing to get dehydrated and taking the wrong kind of calcium.

    • 64oz of fluids daily, no ifs ands, or buts - and yeah, I know it's hard.  It's still possible with work.
    • Do not accept anything less than Calcium Citrate.

ASMBS currently restricts NSAIDs for VSGers too, so I don't think that's really a point to consider anymore. :/
