A friend of mine got his vsg last january and he eats horrible.  He still lost a good 100 lbs but is it still possible he can put the weight back on???  I just figured it would jump start him to eat healthy and work out but it hasn't.

Absolutely it is possible to gain back. With all WLS you have to stay on plan. Your friend will notice it when his honeymoon phase is over. One saying I've read on hear that has stuck with me. Surgery is done on our stomachs, not our minds.

I have a friend who had VSG about a yr and a half ago. He is happy with his weightloss but eats "naughty" stuff all the time. Most concerning is he drinks a LOT of alcohol since his surgery. can't convince him his blood alcohol level is still high whether he feels drunk or not.  VERY dangerous.

Sure. I could easily eat a pint of ice cream every night if I wanted to. The surgery changes our stomachs, not our brains. This is one of the reasons my therapist is a key part of my obesity recovery team.

its possible to eat crap and regain weight with any surgery. more than possible, very likely. it takes alot of discipline and self-searching to learn and maintain healthy habits. the surgery is the easy part.

He can, and he will if he doesn't change things. Don't follow his example.

It's absolutely possible to lose weight with VSG and still eat crappy food.  However, I guarantee you this will be someone who slowly - and then quickly - starts to regain after his "honeymoon" period is over.  After about 12-18 months his "amazing" loss will stop, the scale will STOP rewarding his crappy eating behavior and he will start seeing significant regain that he can't control.

Then he'll be one of those sad, cautionary tales that people shake their head over and say, "See, that weight loss surgery just doesn't work for anybody."

Yes, it's possible to put the weight back on.   The surgery is on your stomach, not your head.  Surgery is not a magic bullet.

If you go back to eating the way you did before surgery, you will gain weight.

If you eat more carbs than you do protein, you will gain weight.

If you drink your calories rather than eat a balanced diet, you will gain weight.

If you eat ice cream, junk food and high calorie carbs regularly, you will gain weight.

When I started my WLS journey, I realized that I could learn something for everyone.

I could learn that "I want to be like THAT"

Or I could learn that "I don't want to be like THAT"

What I eat is really no one else's business and what they eat is not my business, so I learn what I can and try to leave the rest behind.

We can ever truly k ow someone else's full story.
