I agree with the other poster.  Do lots of research on all of the different types of WLS to find what's right for you.  Just because your dad was sick all the time from RNY doesn't mean that you will be.  Stick around, read the boards...plenty of success stories here.  By the way, your wedding pics are BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Good luck in your WLS journey!

Congratulations on taking control of your life and your weight loss journey.  As our members have advised, do your research to find the procedure that is right for you.  Read posts of member's experiences.  Reviews of surgeons in your area.

Once you have reviewed your options surgery wise and decided on one then your next step is to find a surgeon.  We can help you with that.     Here are some links that will be helpful in your research.

If you have not done so, contact your insurance company and verify if they cover WLS and if so what procedures.  If you have Medicaid and or Medicare, contact them to verify if they cover WLS, if so, what procedures and if there are any pre-surgery qualifications you have to meet.  Ask for a list of surgeons in your area that take your insurance then we can assist you with contacting those surgeons on your behalf to get you started on your journey!

I'm sorry that your dad had a bad experience with RNY but my RNY saved my life. I had been overweight my entire life, even as a child. When I had surgery 25 months ago I weighed 265 pounds, had constant knee and back pain, diabetes, uncontrolled high blood pressure, high triglycerides and high cholesterol. I was out of breath going down my basement steps and wore a size 26 pants. Today my blood sugar is normal and so are my triglycerides and cholesterol. My blood pressure is perfect on one low dose pill. I have never vomited since surgery and haven't been sick a day in the last two years. Today I weigh about 120 pounds and have been at this weight for over a year. I can do anything I set my mind to and walk 4 miles every day for exercise. I feel stronger and healthier at 55 than I did at 25. Best of luck on your research and whatever you decide. RNY is not for everyone but by researching and working with your doctor, you can determine which surgery is right for you. Surgery can give you the healthy active life you deserve!

Kristina,  I am 8 year post op from Gastric Bypass surgery,  I was 322 pounds at my weighin.  I read and followed everything the doctor gave to me. I stayed off from work for 6 weeks to adjust to my new lifestyle and I have not had any problems and have keept my 140 pound weigh loss off and I stay within 10 pounds. it was the best decision I made because i was beginning to feel really sick in my body.  Do your research and pray about it and go for it.  Just follow the instructions given to you by the doctor.  My husband has a new wife and he is happy also.

Blessings,

Donna

I chose the sleeve. Less absorbtion issues...great news if you want to get pregnant. You want that baby to get loads of nutrients. I have had many health issues and surgeries also. I had my surgery last march, it was hard at first but I am so much better. I feel amazing...not everyday but now I am healthier. The most amazing thing is when you have the sleeve is are not hungry. Your stomach produces a hormone that signals hungry...that gets cut out...eventually your hunger will come back...I am 7 months post op and still do not get hungry...just cravings.

What ever you choose I wish you the best!

That's what is pulling me towards the sleeve now because that's why I failed on things like nutrasystem and stuff because when I'm hungry I'm hungry! And from what I hear with the band your hungry but you can't eat ..l I'm not sure how I'd handle that I just don't want them to screw up when they cut my stop you know ? And it scares me that there's no going back

So much has changed in the WLS field over the past 14 years.  Very seldom does anyone have "open" surgery anymore.  Generally speaking, lapbands have "fallen to the wayside" and many surgeons don't do them anymore.

Keep reading, reading, and then read some more.  It generally takes about six months from first consult to surgery date - and you don't have to decide on which surgery you will have until you have completed the pre-op stage.

Everyone has fears about the surgery - but the more you learn the less you'll fear.  I wish I had my surgery years ago.

Good Luck!
