Sleeved on October 1st!! How did everyone deal with family life post op?

Getting close! The one piece of pre-op advice I wish I would have taken was to relax. I know that's like saying "don't breathe" but try to relax right now. You'll have plenty of time to get anxious right before surgery.

Good luck!

I'm struggling with the family portion of it.  We always made it a priority, since we have 5 kids, to have family dinners.  Now, I can't eat what they're eating, and what they have smells DIVINE.  My husband sometimes will make me something close to what they're having, but for the most part, I am separate while they eat, and if I do eat with them, it's something less desirable, and it's just making me feel down.

I knew this would be hard - but my husband and kids vowed to help me and change how they ate too, which they have not done AT ALL.

So...that's disheartening.

I don't know how far out you are and what your eating plan allows, but why not prepare yourself something that works for you?

even if it is soup, or water with lemon and a breath mint .... Sit with your family and enjoy THEM and stop making it about what you can't have.

If you can't tolerate food, have your protein shake or whatever you can have BEFORE they eat .. So you will not be hungry and you can just enjoy the conversation.

That's my struggle right now as well. We really try to sit together at dinner time, but right now that's just not working. It's not so much that there's food around that I can't have, but the smell of what's being cooked. Who can really resist the smell of homemade spaghetti sauce simmering, and bacon!?

I can fight the temptation but it just makes it so much harder. I hate that it affects me right now. Once I get to the stage where I can start protein shakes, I think it will get better. Those will have some real calories that can help me feel full and satiated.

Exactly!  I was so eager to get to the soft protein stage, and that felt better for awhile, but even now...it just gets me down.  It might be different if my husband wasn't such an excellent cook, but I know how the food he makes tastes!

I'm certainly not trying to focus on that, but as you said, it's hard when the smell is so amazing!  (And when I'm eating plain moist chicken or turkey for the umpteenth time!)

I do know it's worth it in the long run, but right now, it's just a little sad.

Tonight my husband wanted to go get "5 guys burders/fries" and bring it home to eat.. I just told him he could go get whatever he wants, just fini**** before he comes home. My mouth can taste the food ! I have started on protein Liquids, but I am still hungry... or mentally hungry :) I am getting in my water, and continuing to take my pain meds... Sleeved on 10/8

I had such a disinterest in what others were eating for several months, so they could eat anything in front of me and I wouldn't think a thing about it.

Hi,  I actually came home on full liquids, my appetite has always been small, I actually couldn't wait to come home and cook for my family cause I knew they had not had a home cooked meal since I left and I have a 1 year old. The best advise I could give you is think of the results after all the struggling hard work and sacrifice you are making. Although I came home on full liquids my energy has also been really low, I am struggling to remember to put something in. It is now 5:27 p.m. and although I have had some water getting down the 3oz of atkins protein shake was a struggle. Please let me know how things go and I wish you luck. Hang in there.

the fist few days for me did fly quickly...I am 18 days post op now and I really could not have made it without my family....My daughter was so helpful and my husband was so caring...I am so glad I am able to get up and move around and doing so well...but the weakness is a tough one...every day I am feeling better but the weakness just wont get better until I can eat...lol but I am taking it really slow and just focusing on getting my fluid in and keeping as mobile as I can. Congratulations on your surgery!! Its so awesome isnt it?
