Long Island medium
Funny, I just saw that on TV too.
Serious complications are quite rare and there are risks associated with ANY surgery, not just WLS. You would have to ask your surgeon for his/her personal stats with respect to complications or deaths. There are always going to be stories about terrible complications and outcomes. Keep in mind there are SO many more success stories! When I was considering RNY surgery 9 years ago I weighed the pros and cons of having the surgery vs not going through with it. I was willing to take the risk to immensely improve my health vs dying at 50 from obesity-related illnesses.
Take heart, think positive, take a look at all the successful people here on this site.
VERY best to you,
Karen :)

I think this is similar to Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon. http://www.damninteresting.com/the-baader-meinhof-phenomenon /
Once you start thinking about something, you see it EVERYWHERE. Easier said than done, but try not to worry too much. If these complications were common, no one would be getting these surgeries! Have faith in yourself for doing your research and picking a good surgeon.

A friend of mine has a very high pain tolerance. Notice I said has, not had. The day she went home she was having pain and called her doctor. They asked her on a scale of 1-10 how high was her pain. She said 4. Well it turns out there was a leak in her pouch and she was leaking stomach juices for 3 days before it was caught. She went in for emergency surgery and woke up 3 weeks later. That being said, she is fine today. These complications are very rare so just listen to your body and if you feel anything is off don't be afraid to call. I would be more concerned about a clot, which is why it is so important to walk after surgery. Any surgery has risks.
