Even if this is true for her.... it doesn't necessarily last that long for everyone. If it did, nobody would ever regain. I had no interest in this stuff for a VERY. LONG. TIME. Now, I could easily down 3 donuts and enjoy every second of it.

I am sure those cravings come back, but if as you say you kept them at bay for a very long time, hopefully we will all have even more tools at our disposal to fight these cravings or at the very least be more invested in our weight loss to hopefully resist. We all know we could gain it all back, it is like a dark spectre hanging over our heads. Just because it is a possibility, we don't have to make it the only possibility.

Same here. I know that if I gave in and started eating donuts, before I knew what hit me I'd be stealing purses to get donut money.

Good one

I hope that you are among the many whose diabetes is more easily managed post weight loss surgery.

On the Mom thing... I think a lot of that is fear of the status quo changing... we get used to life and when someone makes a BIG change it throws that for a loop. Whether we realize it or not (can be even subconsciously) we try and re-establish the status quo. That is what we know, the role we feel comfortable in. Thing is... and we know this... WE are making this change not anyone else... we can't expect them to change their behavior... we can hope, we can ask, but bottomline... we will have the Mom's that bring home donuts, the husbands that eat bags of chips, the Grandma that shoves food at us, the friends that wave our pre-op favorites under our nose. We need to figure out a way to deal with our stuff, cause it is our change. Good for you for choosing to see a therapist... I truly believe the "head stuff" is the MOST IMPORTANT PART of this WLS journey.

Best to you. ~Michelle "Shelly"

You can't blame everyone else for what you put in your mouth. Life is full of obstacles and you will have to conquer both. I work at a nationwide very famous homestyle restaurant and I had to learn to manage the cravings.

Life is full of choices. This is your life and you have yo make the right choices for you. You also can't expect everyone else to stop living their lives because you can't control yourself.

I too live with my folks .. I moved in after my divorce as an immediate solution to money issues

fast forward 4 years and I am still here.. due to different medical issues that have cropped up

I feel better staying here to help out and they are happy to have me.. now that doesn't mean everything is always peaches and cream

While my folks are very supportive of me and this journey I am on .. I can not expect them to never have sweets or goodies because I can't

I can not expect them to diet along with me either.. my solution for sweets is .. if I don't make it .. I won't eat it.

Shelly has a lot of high protein goodies on her blog .. have you tried to make any of them?

http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2014/04/post-weight-loss-surgery-menus-day-in_18.html

the search tool is right under the blog image .. ice cream, donuts .. Italian.. she has a bajillion recipes ( thank you Shelly!)

Also, if you search the main OH page and type in recipes .. more will come up

if you are going to eat it .. make a promise to yourself to make it and exercise BEFORE you make and eat it (chair dancing counts!)

It's easy to promise yourself .. ohh I'll do it after but chances are it doesn't get done.

My Dr office gave me the advice to start eating as if I already had the surgery .. taking small sips (waiting 30 mins before & after eating to drink)

eating smaller more frequent meals and chewing WELL and getting that protein in.

The most important aspect my Dr.'s staff has taught me is ..

you can't expect the surgery to be a magic wand

whatever issues you have going in, will still be there when you come out the other side

it's a tool .. how well you utilize it is up to you.

Best wishes to you on your journey

While I think you need to be responsible for what you put into your own mouth, I also think it is easier to be successful at that (and other things) in some environments than in others.  One thing I try to do, which I think has helped me a lot, is to create an environment for myself in which I am more likely to succeed than not.  Living with my mother would not be a positive experience for me.  So I choose not to live with her.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.
