Hi I am new to the site so bare with me. I had a gastric sleeve on November 7, 2013 at the time of surgery I was 239 lbs I now weigh 179. I have recently began eating stuff I had not touched since my surgery well if I am being honest it started fourth of July weekend. I tell myself its okay because I don't eat it in the portions I use too the other night I had two slices of pizza before I use to eat half of a pizza. Having a hard time getting protein shakes down about the only thing I am doing right is I have not stop taken my vitamins. I guess I can consider myself lucky. I have had no complications since my surgery. I have had no dumping syndrome at all!! The only time I have thrown up is right after surgery in the recovery room. I am at a loss now. I am an emotional eater. It was easy after surgery because my surgery was during the cold months where soup was very satisfying and I loved eating them (only way I can eat vegetables but when the summer came they became hard to eat and thats when I started eating what I use to. AND now I have let the CARB monster take over. I have recently gained 3 lbs and getting more down on myself. What can I do?

If you have the sleeve then you are unlikely to dump.  It happens but it's rare.  It is more common with the RNY but even then on 30% with a RNY dump.

This is why they say that they operate on your stomach, not your brain.  That is why it is important that you deal with your eating issues when you have WLS or you won't have the results you are hoping for.  WLS doesn't cure eating issues but it can help you deal with them.

I have found the only way to deal with the carb monster is to not let him in at all.  As you are finding out, it is very hard to eat those things in moderation and it is much easier not to eat them at all then it is trying to control them.

The only way I know to over come the carb monster is to detox completely off of the carbs.  Once you do your ability to resist them will be much greater, but only as long as you don't eat them.  Once you do all bets are off.

People talk about the 5 day pouch test but the basic idea I think is good.  Cold turkey off the carbs.  A lot of protein and fluids to help get them out of the system.  Give yourself some time to detox off of them because you will need to detox.

And once the cravings are gone don't tempt fate by trying "just a little".  As you are finding out, one is too many and a thousand is not enough.

At this point post-op, you probably don't really need shakes, so that's not so big of a deal.

If I were in your shoes, I would work on getting back to my basics.  Those are: lots of protein, lots of water, lots of exercise, no processed carbs (or foods in general if possible), no liquid calories.

It might also be useful to get with a therapist to sort out all of the stuff going on in your brain!

Good luck!

Lots of people have good luck with de-carbing using the Atkins induction diet and then stick with the whole Atkins plan to stay that way. It's rough for the first few days but It will get you where you want to be.

try using the 5 day pouch test diet. I am 13 years out from surgery and tried to re-start my pouch using the 5-day test/diet. I am currently on day 4 and I am extremely happy with it. It is meant to reset the controls the pouch gives you that enable your weight loss. It is not really meant to be a weight loss diet. That being said, I have lost 8 lbs. in the last 4 days! I think it is due to the increased water flushing out my system but even so, the weight loss is a motivator in and of itself!

I wish I had tried this several dimes through the last few years. I really does work , to re-set your pouch as well as to lose weight! Good luch!
