Hello everyone. I am Nino and i am a 34 yr old man who has had the lap band surgery 3 years ago. I have lost over 150 lbs. Ihave went from 497 lbs down to 347 lbs. Recent iihave been gaining some back. I have decided to get the duodinal switch. I have visited my dr 6x once per month and have done all the necessary thing  like tsh levels and psych. The coordinator  said that i might be denied because the 6 times i saw the dr my weight fluctuated between 370 and 380. It went up and down. She said aetna want it to stay at one level. Im very worried. Any opinions?

I know when I went thru my supervised diet whenever I gained the nutritionist/dr would kinda give me reasons as to why I might gain weight & would be kinda ok with the insurance as to why I gained that time. Reasons would be if I ate something the night b4 that would have me retain water, or if I was on my period, although you being a guy can't really use that excuse! LOL. Really though aetna might have the same kind of leeway., with your bmi & if you have comorbidities you should be approved. Good luck!

I would think between your BMI and issues with the Lap Band that you should be approved.  Weight fluctuations can occur for various reasons.

Crossing my fingers for your approval!

This is a good question for your insurance company.  Per Aetna's Clinical Policy Bulletin 0157, "the member must not have a net gain in weight during the [180-day] program."  Maybe you just need to expand your program out another month until you can have a net loss (or net zero).

I went thru Aetna for my surgery and gained 2 pounds the second month of my 3 month diet.  From what I understand as long as you don't weigh more at the end than you did at the beginning you will be approved.  It's the final number they are interested it.  It can only be less or the same, if it's more you may a problem.

I was APPROVED! Lol. Finally once and for all im getting this done! 34 years of being overweight. Yes 34 years...when i came out my mother i was overweight lol. Thank u guys for the responses. I also would like to come back here and do a study of my own. The study i want to do is the correlation between things like people growing up as an only child and obesity and/or being over fed or taught bad eating habits by parents at a very early age. I was a product of both environments, no siblings as well as my mother would make me eat even though i would tell her  i was full. Anyhow...thanks again everyone!
