I have been good about not drinking 30 min before or after meals, but when I do drink I throw up.  I try to take small drinks but I don't know how I guess.

Speaking from my own experience, I'd say you'll learn how to drink slowly or you will regret it.

Use a sippy cup

Use a shot glass

Do whatever you have to to stop throwing up

In the past, when you have taken the first sip of a very hot cup of coffee/tea, what kind of "drink" do you take? A big gulp? Swig? No. You take a tiny sip in case it's too hot. Pretend you are taking a sip of something very hot - the tiniest wee sip. Wait 15 seconds, take another tiniest wee sip. Repeat all day long.

That's really the best example for advice to you. you will either learn to drink slow or learn how to vomit well.  It's all your choice.  Take it from someone who just had her lap band removed because it taught me how to vomit very well.

I sometimes catch myself taking a large mouthful.. But I don't swallow all at once, I swallow it bit by bit, it has helped change my way of drinking.

Also realize that as you heal and adapt, the requirement for small sips can change.  Follow the above advice to learn how to drink now.  It is very important that you get your fluids in.  Also consider adding either lemons or flavor additive to your water - it changes the surface tension and can make it a lot easier to drink.  Also try different temperatures - warm works better for some people.

At 9 months out, I can pretty much chug water when I have to, although anything with carbonation requires small sips.
