MEMBERS SPEAK.....If you could, would you?
one week out we were probably all miserable. they did hernia surgery with my VSG and i couldn't eat so i had a pic line, one week out. i was MISERABLE too...now-3 years later i'd do it again. my only thing is i wish i had paid better attention to regain. i have gained 30 pounds back, after losing 120 pounds...so i'm working on getting some of that off! i quit paying attention to when i was FULL after i met a man who loves to eat as much as i did! gotta pay better attention when i relose some of this weight...

I'm incredibly glad I had my surgery. After 8 months, I've lost over 100lb, I'm off my blood pressure pills, and I no longer need my CPAP. Wearing smaller pants is nice, but the best thing is that I can chase my dogs across the park, not get my backside stuck in an airplane seat, and ride my bike for an hour and a half without collapsing into a wheezing heap. It's been an enormous adjustment and it hasn't been easy, but I'm very grateful that I was able to do it, and that I have friends to support me.

VSG 2013, RNY conversion 2019 due to GERD. Trendweight here!
I'm still a beginner here ( 9 months out, 110 lbs lost), but my ONLY regret is not doing it sooner! My life has changed for the better. I already had a good life overall, husband and family who loves me, good friend support group, so don't think this is about what other people think! I can already do SO MUCH MORE and enjoy life much more than I did before! I love my RNY and really respect my surgeon and his team. I really wish I had done it several years ago when my husband had his surgery so we could have done it together, but that would have ended up a different surgeon, and my after care is MUCH better!
Absolutely. I wish I had done it years ago.
But I'm glad that I waited and opted for the VSG. As a hardcore foodie, it made the decision easier to swallow, literally and figuratively, that I wouldn't be restricted to avoiding sugary foods for the rest of my life out of fear from dumping. Most people who have the sleeve tend to be lighter weights, but my surgeon believed it was entirely possible for me to achieve my goals without the malabsorption that RNY and DS provide. Let's hope he's right.
As of today:
- 179 pounds down from my highest weight (449)
- 149 pounds down from my preop diet weight (419)
- 122 pounds down from my surgery weight (392)
I don't need the daily vicodin and naproxyn just to survive the pain in my joints. I can walk places without needing to sit down every fifty feet, and I can sit in chairs that would never have accommodated my body. I can climb ladders without fear of exceeding their maximum limit.
Having WLS was the best decision I ever made for myself. It's not about how one looks in a bikini or wearing a size 00, but getting back into enjoying your life and feeling healthy.

Not only would I have this over again, I wish I had done it sooner and had not be so afraid of all the bad publicity it gets because some people chose the wrong procedure or it wasn't an option for them, or things aren't good for them for some reason. I can tell you that having a VSG was the best thing I could have ever done and I have a life again. I have rolls of skin that need to be removed and I haven't taken one Metformin f(Medication for Type 2 diabetes) since the day after the operation. I eat anything I feel like eating. ANYTHING. Lately I've been eating Jerky cause I am traveling a lot now. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN PLEASE GET IT DONE!! Get the courage to get your life back!! But two pieces of advice, get a great doctor and take the time to know the procedure you want. You have control, just be confident in yourself, trust yourself. A great doctor will tell you the truth. But there are lots of Doctors who know nothing about Bariatrics. Get a PRO> Mine was Dr Gmora at Hamilton. ONT. Fantastic. Good luck!!
No! There is no way I would change my mind. It's been almost 6 years and I am living life , loving my loved ones and doing what I need to do to take care of me!
yes I do have some problems because of my weight loss surgery but compared to the problems I had when I was 332 pounds it's a walk in the park at 130 pounds I'm proud!
If I had this to do over, knowing what I know now, there is NO way I would have lap band surgery again. I didn't weigh enough to qualify for the rny (and still don't) and I have no idea if the sleeve was offered/covered by my insurance at the time I had my surgery (my surgeon never mentioned it to me in 2005. He only mentioned the rny and the band). While I regret getting the lap band, had I qualified for a different procedure, there's no doubt I would try it if I had this to do over. Hindsight is 20/20. Wish I could go back. Would definitely do something different or ask if other procedures were available rather than taking my doctor's recommendation and running with it. Wish I would have known about a site/community such as this one back then.
