The Dreaded Liquid Diet

So, apparently even though I'm 6-12 months pre-surgery, I'm supposed to follow a 2 week liquid diet followed by the stage 5 limited choice diet until the week before my surgery when I will go back to liquids.  I'm dreading the liquid diet and have no idea where to begin.  How do I prepare? What should I buy?  What do you guys recommend as far as protein powders, recipes, etc? The sheet they give out is pathetically unimaginitive as far as options.

Why on earth would you need to do a liquid diet six to 12 months before your surgery?

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

I'm not really sure.  I went to the info session with dozens of other patients and they gave us a sheet that says "your surgery begins today", with instrictions to start a 2 week liquid diet followed by a "limited choice" diet (the stage 5 diet****il surgery.  I was pretty surprised!  I know I need to lose weight before surgery, but this seems a little ridiculous to me.

I'm sure that wasn't meant for "you" to start the liquid pre-op now. I know for approval for my insurance company I had to attend the info class. Most people in the class were 2-4 weeks pre surgery... so yes "they" would be starting their liquids now. I for one did not have my surgery date yet.

I started my liquid pre-op today which is two weeks out.

I'd check with your surgeon's office!

Good luck

I would call and ask them because that makes no sense. Maybe they were just showing you what you would be doing right before surgery.

Yeah, you need to call and get that straightened out. That doesn't sound right at all!

That definitely doesn't sound right!  I would imagine that, like most of us, you'll have to go through a series of tests and see a bunch of specialists between your first consult with the surgeon and your actual surgery.  This will likely include a nutritionist who can tell you everything you need to know about the two-week pre-op diet.  I agree with the other posters who suggested calling the surgeon.  The all liquid diet is tough, don't start it before you have to!  They might just want you to start making an effort to make healthier choices?  I would call and ask for details!
