How soon can you fly post-op?

I have my last nutrition class this week and then will meet with the surgeon and send the info to my insurance to see if they approve.  I will ask this at my appointment but I was curious if there was any general guideline on how soon after surgery one can fly (and fly internationally).

Soon, I'd imagine.  Given the number of people who get surgery in Mexico and fly back home to the US and Canada right after!

Thank you!  I have a 3 week South America/Antartic cruise in January so was hoping having surgery in September I'd be able to fly by then.

I can't see how that could be a problem :D

Well, it better be 4 days, or I am screwed.  LOL.  I have the sleeve in Vegas on 19 September, and fly home on the 23rd.  Then I have a 15 hour flight to work on 10 October so all better be good.

Just be aware that you won't be able to lift any luggage (or even a purse if it weighs too much). Five pounds is the usual initial restriction, but it does vary from surgeon to surgeon.

Would that be after the 4 days, or are you talking about the long trip 21 days post-op.  No worries on the 4 days, but no lifting at 21 would be a problem.

For me it was six weeks before I was cleared to lift more than five pounds.  Check with your surgeon.  I had RNY and there is a lot more cutting and putting back together than there is with a sleeve.
