Never been to a GYM before. Nevous. What should I expect?

I have never liked working out at the gym. I do all of my exercise at home. I started out with pretty much no equipment, just DVDs, and piece by piece worked up to having almost everything I could ever want in a home gym.
I tried going to the gym when I was still in the early part of my weight loss journey. I felt so embarrassed about people seeing me - someone much bigger than most of the people there - all red and covered in sweat. I hated it. But truthfully, almost all the people there were probably applauding me in their minds. I'm sure there were some jerks, but overall most people think it's good to see someone like that in the gym trying to improve themselves.
You don't have to hire a trainer but you DO need to use the weight equipment. Even if it's just the machines (free weights/dumbbells are much preferred over machines btw). Strength training made a HUGE difference in my weight loss. I didn't lose SQUAT for a while (lapband) and starting a total body workout program that used weights (P90X) did MIRACLES for my body and my weight loss.
Anyway, if you decide to go to the gym, take them up on the free consultation with the trainer so that they can show you how to properly use the machines. That way you avoid any embarrassment fumbling around with them (also, don't be embarrassed - everyone fumbles around and doesn't know how to do it just right at first!!).
You can try going to the gym during off-peak hours... 10:00 am, later in the evening, super super early in the AM. Ask the gym what their off-peak hours are. That way you can avoid large crowds if you want.
In my experience, the YMCA seems to be more "normal people" rather than fitness competitor body types lol. My YMCA is mostly families and seniors with maybe 25% really fit, young, gorgeous people. You can also ask the gym what there clientele is like. Some cater to fitness pros, others to families etc..
I only get on OH every week or so, so feel free to message me on facebook if you have any questions :-).
I've gone & off to the gyms for years & finally belong to one that fits in more with my work schedule, it's 24hours most days except the weekend, parking however can be a problem. Believe me most people at the gym are kinda wrapped up in their own little world & won't really be judgmental of you. I've been & still am, big my whole life & used to think that they might stare at me or judge me, then after awhile I didn't care what they thought & figure it might do them good to see that yeah big girls work out too. Remember to bring a towel ( to wipe down the machines after you use them)& some good tunes & you'll be in your own little world too :) Good luck!
