My hubby is concerned that I am not eating enough calories. I am on day 3 of the pre-op diet and my calorie intake daily ranges from 680(1st day)-1125(so far today). I am wondering what others pre-op calorie intake for the day is ranging from. My hubby is scared that i may place my body into starvation mode. Thanks

Starvation mode is a myth, so I wouldn't worry!

Post op, I wasn't eating more than 500 calories for a number of months.....you will be just fine and will drop some weight.

Even at seven months I seldom reach 1000.

Good luck on your WLS journey.

Oh boy, starvation mode again. Don't worry, it's a load of bullcrap. You'll be eating a lot less than 1125 for a long time after surgery, and you'll be just fine. If you can adjust to it preop, so much the better.

preop i was 380 and on the preop diet i was eating around 800 calories a day....and i'm going on 3 months post op right now, and most days i am under 500 calories. And most of my calories are from protein shakes

@Amorse,

I am a bit concerned for you if most of those 500 calories are from protein shakes.  Have you talked to your surgeon about that?  I am not trying to be an armchair doc but with my band I was always told to try to get as many calories as possible from "solid" protein so your body can hold onto it better.  In fact, many docs and patients prefer no shakes at all but solid food sources.

Starvation mode is an out-dated theory. Both VSG and RNY people eat well short of 1000 calories for a very long time!

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

Chances are, you're not on the pre-op diet for very long (two weeks?), so even if starvation mode is a real thing (I didn't realize it was outdated... good to know!), you're likely not going to get there in that time.  Plus, if you're eligible for weight loss surgery, your body probably has enough "padding" to fuel itself.  ;-)

The last time I lost significant weight, I worked with a nationally recognized doctor.  He had me on 1300 calories a day, but I worked out 2+ hours a day, so my net calorie intake was pretty low.  I dropped significant weight, and I don't think I experienced any sort of starvation mode.  Good luck to you!

I was told 600 calories for two weeks before surgery.  I think you ate dOing great! Good luck on your upcoming surgery
