Kidney stones

I'm just curious, hanyone had a kidney stone prior to weightloss surgery? Doing all of the pre-op testing they found a stone and I ended up having a ct-scan for another reason that captured the stone. It doesn't bother me 99% of the time and my wls team didn't really deem it am issue. I was told if it bothers you to look into it. Here I am just a few weeks away from having wls and I saw a urologist who thinks I should have the stone removed first. I don't feel comfortable being under anesthesia two times in such a short period of time. I know we are at a greater risk to develop stones after surgery. How do I get an unbiased opinion of what can wait?  It was difficult to schedule the wls I'm the first place - mainly with work. 

Any advice or insight is appreciated.

My concern for you would be hydration post op. Initially it can be really hard to get enough fluids and that can make the stone pain flare. I can understand why having lithotripsy first, even if it delays surgery, might be wise. 

My kidney stone issues started way before my WLS. You can take a chance on waiting to deal with the stone after if it really never bothers you (yet), but you WILL have to at some point so why not get it over with and not take the risk.

Since WLS can exacerbate the kidney stone issue, I'd be inclined to get it taken care of. I felt like roadkill after my WLS, and can't imagine if I'd added the misery of a kidney stone to what I was going through immediately post op. 

I passed a stone within 8 weeks of surgery and it sucked :( Especially since a lot of complication symptoms are the same as stone symptoms!  This made it much scarier for me than the other stones I've had, since I was super worried that it was a sleeve complication.

I've had 3 stones pre-op.  They all sucked.  How big is your stone?  Could you pass it on your own?  My easiest time passing a stone (it wasn't easy, but "easiest" compared to the others), was when I got a script for Vicodin, a 12-pack of beer, and sat on the couch with a heating pad.  The Vicodin is for the pain, the beer is to make you pee, and the heating pad is on the back to help get you comfortable.  It took about 2 hours, but that stone passed "easier" than the others did. (I am 19 months out, and haven't had a stone post-op yet).

Otherwise, if it is not bothersome, I wouldn't do anything about it.

I've had kidney stones all my life I just had gastric bypass 5 weeks ago and im actually passing kidney stones now it's the same as before surgery. I wouldn't let that change yourself from getting the surgery. They will be there no matter what. Hope this helps

The stone is too big to pass.  I was told I had a 15% chance to pass it. My weight loss surgeons office got back to me. Dr is on vacation so I won't know until 2wks before my surgery if I can still have my surgery. What a bummer.  They said to get the stone removed since there is a chance it could cause an infection. Hopefully I won't have to wait too much longer.

A chance of you passing it on your own would be the only reason to wait. But since you can't, there is no benefit to waiting, and several drawbacks.

Not only can it cause infection, it will eventually demand attention. When mine became too large (I think around 9 mm) it moved around in the kidney till it blocked the outlet for pee, and became an emergency, not to mention horrifically painful. It really is best to deal with it when you are not in agony and in an emergency situation. 

I can always find a reason to procrastinate, but this is one thing that won't go away, and cir****tances with it can only get worse.
