Having a Hard Time Getting in My Fluids
Hello Everyone,
Well, I am now 3 days post-op. Surgery was a success and so far nothing too concerning other than getting in enough liquids. It is very hard for me to do, as well as getting in adequate nutrition. I went to many nutrition appointments and support groups, and learned everything that I should know. But, now that I've had RNY, it seems like everything for me now is a big blur.
Has anyone else experienced this? I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice. I do not want to fail within my first week!
Thank you,
Pokey
Hi, Pokey! I'm Elisabeth and I know exactly what you're going through!! I'm 3 weeks post surgery and if it weren't for my husband handing me my pills when it was pill time and preparing my shakes, I don't know what I would have done!!
My first bit of advice is to get the instruction pack your surgeon gave you and open it to the first phase post op. Keep it open on a table so you know what you're allowed to have. You're probably an all-liquid diet right now, I'd guess. Highlight or circle your protein goal. The other thing I did was join "myfitnesspal.com" and keep a food diary or just write it down in a notebook. That's where you track your water and protein. Another way to track water is to get a case of small water bottles and as you empty them, toss them into a bag for the day. You can count the volume and figure out what you've taken in that way.
My protein goal is 60 grams. My particular shakes (Unjury) have 20 grams protein per scoop, then add whatever protein you get from the milk you're using. I'm using Almond milk because I'm lactose intolerant and it's also low-carb. So, breakfast, chocolate shake nursed slowly: BAM! 21 grams protein or 1/3 of my day's allotment. I also tracked how much fluid went into the shake, so 1 cup of 'milk' means 1 cup of liquid added towards my goal.
And yes, my brain felt like Swiss cheese the entire first week, so you're not alone. If you keep having problems, you should call your doctor's office to see if they can help you. I'm sure you're not the first to have problems like this. But you have to drink your water or you'll end up back in the hospital and you have to take in protein or your body won't heal!
Shoot me an e-mail if you want to talk further.
I had my surgery the same day! My Dr. and Nutritionist said to focus on the 2-3 protein drinks and work up to the water total. I had about 40 oz the first 2 days home.
