Looking for a Family Physician

Hi everybody,

I am looking for a new family practice or internist doctor for myself.  Does anybody here go to a physician that is well educated on weight loss surgery.  I find that most of the physicians I have gone to do not have a clue what it is all about and what you can and can't do once you have had the procedure as far as medications, etc.  I live in Huntsville, Alabama if anyone on here has a doctor in that area they could recommend, I would appreciate it.  If not, and you do have such a doctor, please share with me how you went about finding such a person?  Thanks!

With as common as the RNY, I'm surprised that your PCP doesn't know much about it.  If you like your PCP and they are willing to learn (like mine was about the DS), then you two can work together.

My PCP knows next to nothing about WLS, even though he has had a few who have had RNY.  I was his first VSG patient and he had never heard of it until I went in to him 5 days post surgery with a blood clot.  But he has been willing to learn and when I was getting wierd results from Coumedin to treat the clot, he called my surgeon who told him what to switch me to.  I think that is the best we can hope for.  Even my gastroenterologist lacks a lot of knowledge about it, but she is an excellent doctor and I wouldn't switch from her for anything.  I suggest you get names of some good knowledgeable internists who are open to learning.  Doctors have so much to keep up with in their own specialties, that most just don't the time or energy to cross over into others.
