Ten years out and having terrible body cramping

Chelated minerals are mostly absorbed in the part of a small intestine that was bypassed in RNY people.

Citrate is good for us. Specially when taken 2:1 or even 1:1  calcium to magnesium.

Low calorie - low carb diet constipate me - I don't mind little help from magnesium.  I take citrate for bones and muscles.  I take 800-1200 mg of mag oxide to help with constipation

How about some pickle juice?  Extra salt added.

Internal dehydration due to losing glycogen and drastically reducing insulin's circulation in your body.

Excesdive Insulin causes water retention - when you go low carb - your body drastically reduces insulin and the body dumps as lot oif water - it is the 5-9 lbs initial weight loss on a low carb diet.  But tha****er is going to remove minerals from inside of yuour body - flash them out - causing imbalances - mostly in sodium - potasium- magnesium and calcium.  You may have enough of them - but not properly balanced.

You you may try is to drink natural - NSA - pickle juice, bone broth, add salt - see salt to Everything (yes I put it in my coffee, protein shake, etc.)

Google "low carb diert - muscle cramps " - very common side effect when changing pH of fluids in the body...

I use sea salt, eat pickles and lots of yellow mustard , take app 1500 mg magnesium a day, eat seaweeds, herbs and spices.

I make my own broth and it is salty - so good.

The lab may show their numbers are in normal range - but they may not be in balance .

Natural pickles - like Bubbies - dill pickles - yum...when I had to give up starches - I craved pickles and I had many days that one large jar of them was not enough for one day.  Today - I gasd thee same jar for last 2-3 weeks...

Wow Hala -- that's really interesting!!  I used to keep mustard packets by my bedside -- I swear if I woke with a cramp that eating one would make it go away instantly!  Really cool info.

Mustard - now that the " pickle  reign " is over I deal with yellow mustard era.   No Dijon/ or any nice and exotic - simple ( no artificial additives) yellow mustard.  My BF jokes that I eat cold cuts so I can eat 1/2 jar of mustard.  It is almost over - but in the top of the "mustard reign " I used it as salads dressing - lots and lots of it. I used to carry yellow mustard jar in my purse.

I developed terrible cramping from drinking 5 hour energy drinks.  When I eliminated all caffeine they went away.

Thanks everyone. The mustard thing is very interesting.  I do find myself craving salt and end up eating chips and other salty snacks. Thus, the weight gain. White dove, I would be very sad to give up my morning coffee. I have wondered if caffeine played a role. I very rarely drink anything carbonated so i limit myself to coffee and water. I did find a vitamin drink called EcoDaily which has electrolytes that helps some.

My daughter called yesterday to tell me she was engaged. looking at a winter wedding so I have an added incentive to lose again.

Ditto the info from Hala.. Mg, potassium, but especially SODIUM. If you are very low carbing, you need a lot more salt than you normally would. Do not skimp on it, plus it tastes great. Make sure your labs are ok, but for me and my occasional bouts of night-time shin cramps, salt, salt, mg pills, and maybe a bit of potassium..

Another person who befcame low in magnesium after surgery.  I take 2 magnesium supplements per day (one at night and one in the morning) -- and no more leg cramps!  Had my blood tested last week and my mag. level was at the "lowest" of normal.  If I get leg cramps again, I was told to get a mag. prescription from my surgeon.

I take a teaspoon of mustard.  Helps FAST!  :)  I know...yuck!  Also vinegar helps.
