Just met with my surgeon and I am scared.....HELP!

I am new here. I met with my surgeon on Thursday and I was hoping to have the gastric sleeve but he told me I can not have that one done because of my acid reflux. He informed me that I will have to have the bypass instead. I am nervous because I had spoken to a couple colleagues who had the sleeve and both look great and rave about the surgery. I did a lot of research on the sleeve and felt comfortable having it. I heard many negative things about the gastric bypass ie; dumping, that it makes me nervous. Now that I've found out that I can not have it I am very nervous about having the bypass. Can anyone please tell me if they felt this way and how they have done.

Even if you are one of the 30 per cent who dump, it's very easily controlled by diet - same with RH and all the other "horrors" you hear about RNY.  I will have survived my RNY for 10 years in a couple of weeks.

Ultimately it's your choice.

If you don't trust your surgeon and his recommendations, perhaps a second opinion might be in order?   

Definitely agree with Kim. RnY isn't quite the horror you may have heard.

 I believe that the sleeve can in some cases worsen reflux, although you will get more specific information if you post this on the sleeve board. I would seek a second opinion.

If you really want the sleeve, there is a procedure you can have  (Nissen Wrap, I think) that may fix the reflux.  I'm don't know much else about it, but it's worth exploring.

If I dump I know exactly what caused it.  That is something that I have complete control over.  Acid reflux might be much worse with the sleeve and it won't be because you went off your plan.   The sleeve is a great surgery, but so is the RNY.  RNY has a nice bonus with the first few years you do not absorb everything that you eat.  That gives you a great head start on getting the weight off.

I had VBG in 1986 and suffered from severe GERD for YEARS.  In 2010 I had a revision to RNY and my GERD is completely cured.  I am one of the few that dump (only 30% of RNY patients dump).  I control it easily with diet.  The things that make you dump shouldn't be a part of your new eating plan anyway.  I can eat up to 12 grams of sugar without dumping.  So if I want to eat one cookie...I can.  I just can't eat the whole package like I used to.  I also have RH which is easily controlled with a high protein, low carb lifestyle.  It's really pretty easy once you get into the new routine.

Have you had an endoscopy to rule out hernia as cause of the reflux?  

I just found out I do have a hernia. Does that make a difference?

If the hernia is causing the reflux, then there's really no reason not to have VSG since the hernia can be fixed during the surgery and that should fix the reflux as well.  At least that's my understanding of things. 

I have had GERD (reflux) for years and I had the sleeve.  The kind of issues I have now are different from the ones I get from GERD.  Granted, they are both pain in the chest, but I can tell the difference and it has not made the actual "GERD" worse.  My surgeon did not try to steer me to RNY because of it, although he did say my reflux may be worse for awhile because of it.  Different surgeons have different opinions about this and if you can see some other surgeons for different opinions, I would suggest doing so.
