Low Iron and Platelets. Having iron transfusion
I just had iron infusion today. Second of 4. I have 2 more - next 2 weeks.
There are different types of iron. I get venofer. The whole thing tasked 3-4 hours.
Iron iusd critical. I don't like the infusdionsd - but I have more energy when my iron is good.
I don't think platelets are affected by iron... Thery may give you more than just iron.
Good luck.

I think when she said platelets she was referring to her hemoglobin, which was my initial indicator that something was wrong.

I've had three infusions. You will feel so much better. It's really not bad to go through. It takes several hours, so bring a good book. I get a little headache for a day or so after... but minor compared to the energy I get from the infusion.
For those that get the infusions, your Drs do not question why your ferritin is low? You do not take extra iron to try and keep it up after an infusion?
I feel like my Dr is playing hard ball and you guys are getting the infusions without issue it seems. I'm a bit frustrated because every week I am feeling worse. I have been at a 3 with my Ferritin in the past and I was in rough shape and do not want to get there again.
Thanks!
The first time I went for infusions the cause was clear - I was practically hemorrhaging every couple of weeks due to fibroids and the need for a hysterectomy. Add to that an RNY that impedes iron absorption and you have yourself a huge problem. I've recently started going again for infusions (had the hysterectomy, so that isn't the issue) because my ferritin was at 7. There aren't other physical issues that would affect the absorption other than the RNY.
Edited to add: What I forgot to say is I understand why the hematologist wants to know the cause, but what I don't understand is not treating the symptoms while searching for the cause.

My ferritin was at 10 when I had my first infusion. It went up to 113 after. Three months later I was back down to 35. My PCP will not let my ferritin drop below 50... she prescribes iron infusions. She told me that if ferritin levels get below 50 people get symptomatic. Her primary goal is to keep me feeling good.
I take 240 mg of Carbonyl Iron and 1600 mg of vitamin C... and my iron still gets low...just not as fast.
I don't understand how waiting to give you iron infusions will help them figure out why you are iron deficient. If you need iron... you need iron. I think it's time for a new hematologist.
This is a new hemotologist for me, the other on that wouldn't do an infusion years ago is in the same practice, but I didn't want to see him and so I saw this new one and she operates the same way. Pretty frustrating.
Thanks for the responses ladies.
