Carnitine Deficiency

I just wanted to share something that seems to be little known and has impacted my life tremendously.  I am a nurse and have had regular blood work since my surgery 12 years ago.  I had to beg doctor after doctor to check every vitamin level I could find in the research that bypass patients may be deficient of.  After 1.5 years, 2 surgeries and mostly bedridden at this point, I sought help with a specialist in peripheral neuropathy at Cornell University.  I just finished all my testing so I don't have  the whole picture yet.   One of the first things he asked me if anyone had checked my Carnitine level.  I said no.  It turns out that it indeed was low at 26.  Lower limit of normal was 34. It is a protein deficiency.  I thought I was eating enough protein.   The word needs to get out to patients and physicians.  I believe that we are the guinea pigs who are paving the way in this arena.  There are few medical bariatricians out there and it seems that doctors think they can handle us.  If this turns out to be the cause, I will be grateful that at least there is treatment with supplementation.  I am hanging on to hope at this point.  Say a prayer.

A lot of people post op RNY need to

Take extra proteins.  Some do fine with 50-60 gr as day, but some - like you, me and few more need more than that. I need  min 80 - with optimum 120-150 per day,  and not all proteins are equal.

Hope you gertg better fast.
