How long were you on pain meds after RNY?

Had surgery on Thursday June 26. I'm drinking some fluids without any problems and I'm able to walk a little but I do have quite a bit of pain on my left side by the rib cage. I was told that it can be because I still have the drain in me. I just wanted to know how long people are generally on the pain medications. I'm 4 days out and still needing them on a regular basis.

One I left hospitals I took one dose a day. At my one week mark I was done w pain meds. But I didn't have a lot of pain it was mostly discomfort from the gas. I felt like that was never going away...but it did after aboutva week. Walking helped a lot!

I had my RNY on Tuesday June 24, no drain, but had the same kind of pain you describe. Was told it could be atelectasis, when your lung kind of sticks to itself.  After that I did the incentive spirometer religiously. The pain has diminished so that I don't need any pain med as of Sunday. Was able to walk about 45 min yesterday. Hope you feel better soon.

After I left the hospital two days after surgery, I think I took the prescription meds another day or so, and then Tylenol for a couple of days at night.

You'll be in some pain for a few days, but every day gets a little easier and once you get the drain out, it gets a lot better.

It was so long ago that I really don't remember.  But knowing me?  I probably took them until they ran out!

Pain tolerance varies from person to person, so there is no typical time patients are on pain meds.  I was on pain meds for a week and a half after surgery.  Your pain is such that you still need pain meds 4 days out, I hope you don't think that's abnormal, it's not.

I took my prescribed pain meds on schedule (to prevent pain) for a week then switched to Tylenol for a week. That worked for me.

Had no narcotics after the day of surgery but I do have a high pain tolerance.   Was able to drive the day after discharge - you know you can't drive until you have been off the pain meds for 24 hours!

The left side pain is where all the work is done and muscles are cut, so the pain may linger for a couple of weeks while it's healing.
