OK, you want to know what people ate at three weeks post op? I ate what my surgeon's plan said to eat.  That's what I was eating at three weeks post op.  The stuff on my surgeon's plan.

I guess I wonder why you "jumped the gun" with your plan :( What's next?

I'm not sure if I did or not..wondering if I should choose liquids or purees at this point, my surgeon gave a very vague plan, so I'm a little on my own, with help from my general practitioner.

RNY on 10/21/13

Congrats on your surgery!

I had a RNY, but I was eating pureed food for three weeks, 2-4 oz per meal, then progressed to soft foods for a week, then regular foods...I am 8 months out and still eat no more than 4 oz per meal because of Petunia the pouch.

Ok, I'm a medical professional, not a nurse mind you, but I have worked in hospitals for 10 years with nurses, sooo...I will attempt to appeal to your medical logic. What would you tell a patient who just had an amputation, still have their staples and sutures in place, you KNOW they have swelling and loss of sensation because the nerves have been severed, yet this patient insists they can put pressure on their limb? You know that is a bad idea because they cannot feel how much pressure they are exerting on the suture line and they risk rupturing their sutures, harming themselves and undoing all the work the surgeon did, despite how much they insist it will be okay, right? You also know that even though they are rationalizing why they can do all sorts of various things, it is a BAD idea and they need to follow the surgeon's (who went to medical school and knows way more than the patient) advice and guidelines so they will have optimal healing and best results, right?

Sooo...think about your stomach. You essentially amputated a large portion of your stomach, your nerves were severed so you cannot feel if you have eaten too much and have placed too much pressure on your staple line. There was a lot of work done and you are most likely still swollen. Your brain is messing with you and telling you "This is hard! I don't want to follow the rules because I want food!"...but what would you tell your patient? Ultimately it is YOUR stomach, your life and your outcome, so do what you will, however, if it is something you would recommend a patient not to do, maybe you shouldn't do it yourself.

Regarding your weight loss...nice job! I think you're doing excellent. Best wishes.

Love your response! And thank you! You are totally right too, but I am eating pureed food and today the soft meat and cheese. I wish I could have had the surgery here and had a nutritionist and doctor, it just didn't work out that way. I'm following the Cornell plan to the t with the exception of being able to get all the protein in. I'm coming very close though, every day I get a little higher up on the protein ladder, I just cannot do those drinks!

I think you should follow your surgeon's plan.  Since you haven't been following the plan, I suggest giving your surgeon's office a call and asking for advice.

I personally don't think you are insane for changing your plan.  But I am biased because I had my surgery at NY Presbyterian Cornell Medical Center and I had no preop plan because my surgeon thought there was no need to torture his patients with a lengthy liquid diet and that he was skilled enough to not need the liver to be smaller.  He has done thousands of procedures.  One day after the surgery and for the next two days I was in the hospital I was eating purees - things like puréed chicken, never with any issues.  I was duscharged eating purees and soft foid and healthy stuff rather than SF jello and pudding which is crap.  Good luck with your recovery.
