I'm considering gastric bypass.  I've thought about it a lot over the last 10 years.  I'm now 41 years old and need to lose about 80 pounds.  I'm wondering if anyone else in my range can comment on the need for skin removal, or if I should hope that my skin will bounce back in due time.

Skin doesn't bounce back, I'm afraid. At just 41 and not (edited to add the "not" which I omitted!) being very large you may be lucky. But there is nothing you can do other than remove it after the fat has gone. Exercise tones the underlying muscle but doesn't affect the skin.

the extent of loose skin depends on age, degree of obesity, how long you were obese, your genes.

So most of have flaps and folds, some have it removed! A very few have no real problem!

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

I had RNY 10 years ago at aged 41 - there is a "before" picture on my profile - I lost 120lbs in 6 months.   You will have to friend me to see the picture.

I had my surgery at 44 yrs old. My surgeon told me that at my "advanced age" I'd need skin removal when I reached goal. I am now 13 yrs post op and I haven't had any skin removed. I don't look great naked but who cares - I look good in clothes. I don't have enough skin to warrant surgery and don't think I could get approved anyway. Skin shrinkage is a big thing- there are many factors that determine If you'll need surgery later on or not. How many times have you stretched it out and shrunk it back, how elastic is it now, scar tissue/stretch marks won't shrink back. You can do a few things post op that will help. Drink lots of water - hydrated skin shrinks back, dry skin stays saggy. Exercise a lot - muscle under the skin will tone up the skin over it and make it more taught, making sagging less noticeable. Lose slowly. Love the plateaus as you go down on the scale. Your skin gets a chance to shrink up and catch up to the weight loss. It's fun to lose 100 pounds or more in 6 months, but your skin can't keep up. Not everybody needs or wants skin removal surgery. Be in the best shape going into your surgery so you can lose the weight you want and exercise as a post op to maximize weight loss and skin tightening. and if you do need something done later, it's completely do-able by a reputable plastic surgeon after a couple years out.

No amount of exercise will tone skin, unless you jack youself up and replace fat with insane amounts of muscle exercise isn't going to fix skin.  Exercise is healthy and good for you so you should do it, just don't expect a miracle if you have been overweight for a long time and have stretch mark riddled skin.

I has VSG in 2011 and lost 150 pounds over the ensuing time. I am over 20 years older than you and I had lower body abdominoplasty in April for removal of 20 pounds of skin & belly fat. Last week I had removal by liposuction of 20 pounds of butt and thighs . I have one more surgery scheduled for Sept which is removal of the hanging skin from the lipo.

You are young enough to get into better shape after surgery by an exercise program. You would not have had as drastic weight loss.

Good luck.
