gastric sleeve and acid reflux
Bonnie , I have the same problem. I am scared that I will get back into having horrible GERD attacks, which I had suffered from some 5 years back. I do have a lapband for 10 years now which is in the process of being taken out this summer (date not set yet) and my surgeon suggested to get a sleeve and I was kind of excited after I had read a lot of good things about it. But one thing is the trouble with acid reflux in some cases.
I am so back and forth because I do not ever want to have to go through the times when I woke up ever 15 to 30 minutes sufficating on my own stomach acid. But I also am not really keen on getting the bypass. I will talk to my surgeon to discuss the size of the bougie since. I have read lots of research and the success quote in weight loss results is equal if getting a 32F or 40F . But a bigger 40F bougie is supposed to be more effective in keeping acid reflux down. So I am leaning to sleeve but bigger.
Do some research on a couple different boards and find out for yourself which surgery will get rid of the acid reflux. I originally was recommended to my surgery to have Weight Loss Surgery to get rid of the acid reflux, the weight loss would be a bonus. It was eating my esophagus and I was having spasms-felt like a heart attack. My primary doc sent me to my surgeon and I was told the RNY would get rid of my acid reflux. I went away the day I had surgery and I've not taken anything for it since. I was on prescription meds for heartburn/reflux for years before that. I know the band will make it worse in some cases - I was told that wasn't an option for me. I'm happy with my RNY and love not having any acid reflux anymore.
Jen 13 yrs post op RNY
Hi Bonnie!
i was going to have the VSG on 3/19, however the EGD 8 days prior discovered I had extremely bad GERD and an ulcer. So my surgeon and I made the decision for me to have an RNY instead...scheduled 7/17/14.
She said it was a better choice for me and honesty I decided to take her professional advice because she has been doing these surgeries along with her colleague who I spoke with as well (and he's the chief of Bariatric Surgery for my insurance/location) for years, and he agreed as well.
Its all in what you want to do really, but do the research and find out what your best option would be for the long haul 😊
